Default Biggest submission/ground/BJJ upsets

Fighters have gone toe to toe standing up with the better striker falling on more than a few occasions but you don't see that happening as often on the ground. Getting an upset over a better submission/BJJ fighter is much more uncommon than a KO. I'm wondering what some of the biggest submission upsets have been. A few that come to mind are:

- Forrest Griffin subs Mauricio Shogun Rua via RNC
- Frank Mir subs Roberto Traven via armbar
- Cole Miller subs Jorge Gurgel via triangle
- Mackens Semerzier subs Wagnney Fabiano via triangle
- Kevin Burns subs Roan Carneiro via triangle

*I do not count Fedor against Werdum as an upset as Werdum was clearly the better ground fighter.

all good choices. denis kang is pretty damn slick on the ground, and mousasi forced an instant top when he won the dream MWGP. one of my favorite subs.

Oh yeah those two are great choices. I was quite surprised with both, which popped another fight into my head... Kang/Belcher.

kang has that problem. he was getting the best of belcher for nearly the whole fight... but he got really careless with his movement going in and got caught in that guillotine. it was a testament to belcher though... it looked like he changed his footing during that last exchange that kang didn't notice, setting up the sub. beautiful work really.

That is a pretty legit list right there. What about these?

- Hughes chokes out Almedia (Although Hughes doesnt have a black belt, he sure should)
- Urijah Faber choking out Assuncao.
- Jim Miller taps out Oliveria (I know Miller is a black belt but Oliveria had so much hype behind him and Miller tapped him fairly easily)

How about Mayhem subbing Sakuraba? Expected KO/TKO but not a sub.

I forgot about Lindland submitting the Michael Jordan of BJJ.

As for, Miller submitting Sakuraba. I think both are legit on the ground obviously. Miller encompasses BJJ whereas Sakuraba was probably the best catch wrestler in all of MMA. He was very successful in using his tools to combat against BJJ. I think this falls more in line with the Fedor/Werdum win.... more of a shock that he got submitted but not due to the credibility of the opponent.

Hughes choking out Almeida was a huge upset on the ground. I did not think that was going to happen at all, especially out cold like that.

Faber and Benavidez are both pretty good on the ground considering both don't have that high credentials in BJJ. I think Faber is a purple belt, not sure about Benavidez but Benavidez has upset two legit black belts in Fabiano and Torres.

Miller tapping out Oliveira is a bit tricky. I think Oliveira is great on the ground, and has great explosive submissions and transitions, but I'm wondering in terms of credentials if it's really that uneven. Both got their black belts around the same time (in the summer of this year I believe), although Oliveira has titles in BJJ tournaments as a blue belt and a purple belt. I still don't think its that crazy of a difference between the two.

Not sure why you kept bringing up Benavidez but I was talking about Raphael Assuncao who is a black belt in BJJ while Faber is a purple belt. So maybe you were confused but I'm definitely now confused.
