Strikeforce welterweight champion and potential free agent Nick Diaz (23-7 MMA, 4-0 SF) will not test the open market.

Strikeforce officials today announced that the popular and sometimes controversial Diaz has signed a new multi-year agreement with Strikeforce.

"I'm looking forward to continuing my career with Strikeforce," Diaz stated in today's release.

Diaz debuted for Strikeforce in the main event of the April 2009 event "Strikeforce: Shamrock vs. Diaz." Diaz earned a second-round TKO over Shamrock, and the California native hasn't looked back since.

Diaz has ripped through Strikeforce's welterweight division with one-sided wins over K.J. Noons and Scott Smith, and he's also handled a Lithuanian import in Marius Zaromskis, as well as a trip to Japan to face Hayato "Mach" Sakurai.

Diaz has earned eight straight wins overall, and many MMA pundits had wondered aloud if the Strikeforce welterweight champ might take his services elsewhere. Diaz said he's happy with the quality of opposition Strikeforce has been able to schedule for him.

"When I first got here, there weren't a lot of great 170-pound fighters for me to fight, but that's definitely changed," Diaz stated. "There's a lot of really good fighters in the division now, and I'm ready to fight anyone who thinks they can beat me."

Diaz's next fight is in the main event of January's "Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Cyborg" event, where he'll face Brazilian striker Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos.



That's too bad, I was really hoping to see him in the UFC.

Noons, Mariusz, Mach, and now Santos...neither of which are top 20 when he fought them..(maybe Zaromskis but still not a big name)

Guess hes scared of the WW in the UFC

I guess i don't really blame him. it comes down to what you want out of your career. If he doesnt really care for chasing being the best in the world and facing the best in the world...there is no reason to leave. He's basically SF's guy now. Shields is gone and he is the man at 170 and potentially 185 if he wants. Im sure Coker takes good care of him since hes one of the big names for the promotion. He also doenst have to deal with a shitload of top notch wrestlers in SF. If he comes back to the UFC he has to deal GSP, Fitch, Kos, Shields, possibly Diego. He can fight his fights the way he wants and be the man on the block. More power to him i say.

Woodley, Bowling and Saffiedine all can be future champions. Daley could be his next fight followed by the winner of Saffiedine - Woodley.

But still not enough depth in that division...and again, they wouldnt be considered top competition

To be honest, I never expected him to jump ship...he got a good thing going with SF, especially with Coker, who he just cant do anything wrong by.

First Mayhem, now the UFC.

There are currently no challenges for Nick in the SF WW division that would be taken seriously besides Paul Daley. Woodley/Saffiedine? Come on Nick... Even their MW divison doesn't offer him many matches either.

Nick Diaz VS Lawler II/Cung Le/Radach/MAYHEM/Souza? Very interesting matches but the point is he isn't facing top competition in the UFC, so his status is limited. I would much rather see him in the UFC. At least Nate is trying to fight with the best.

Anderson's and GSP's jockstraps would kick Nick's ass.

I wonder who he considers to be "really good" contenders? Off the top of my head I honestly cant think of one person in SF's WW division that could pose a legit threat to Diaz. I guess it's easy money for Diaz. I'm sure he got a sweet deal from SF and he gets to beat up guys that really dont pose much of a problem for him. Good move by Diaz to rake in the money if he can get it.

You would think with the chance to fight top competition to further improve his status as a top WW, better payday, and to join his friend (Shields) and his bro (Nate) would be enough motivation for him to jump ship

I dunno, maybe he was on some goooood shit when the contract was presented to him
