| Georges St. Pierre vs Jake Shields on tap for UFC 129 UFC 129: Randy Couture vs. Lyoto Machida, Georges St. Pierre vs. Jake Shields on Tap - Bloody Elbow Quote: |
Dave Meltzer and Steve Cofield are also reporting that UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre will likely (though not officially as of yet) defend his title against Jake Shields at the same event. Notwithstanding what is likely to be Couture's final fight, with GSP defending his title in what should be a fantastic beatdown in arguably the capital of mixed martial arts, UFC 129 is set to be a monstrously successful event.

Man is it just me that doesn't think Shields deserves it just yet. Sure he got the win against Kampmann but only just. I'd like to have seen Shields in another fight with a top level WW before the GSP fight. However, I am looking forward to this one, sure to be a chess match (before Shields gasses in the third).

i was so excited about this when jake signed but he didnt look good against kampmann and shouldnt of gotten a title shot off that. i think he shouldnt be fighting at WW i mean he killed dan henderson at middle weight i dont see why he isnt fighting there. the cut seemed have killed him in his last fight.

GSP finishes this fight, no doubt in my mind.

Shields definitely needs to improve before he faces GSP. He looked horrible against Kampmann imo. Yeah, Shields probably should have stayed at middleweight.

If he finished Kampmann in the first round, he wouldn't have realized the detrimental effects of the 20 lb cut (on the day of), and subsequently may have realized it only in the GSP fight.
I have no doubt Shields will come in much better shape, although I still think he will run out of steam in the championship rounds. That's not because Shields will come in bad shape, it's just that GSP sucks all the air out of you.
Thus far I feel GSP has shown the better wrestling (mostly exemplified by the TD and TDD facets considering other aspects of wrestling are rarely used), however, you will rarely see any fighter so committed to getting a takedown like Shields. Once he grabs a hold of you, he'll try 5 times to get you down before you can even get him off of you. Just look at the Hendo and Kampmann fights for example, they both sprawled 2-3 times on the TD attempts, and Shields still keeps twisting and turning until he gets the takedown. He doesn't get discouraged that easily. That's really important against someone like GSP whose opponents have been discouraged after failing to implement their gameplan.

What still gets at me is that Koscheck could have won against GSP with his wrestling IF he had the same mentality and gameplan as Shields will most likely have going into this championship fight..
Shields will look good, or at least better than all the other recent GSP opponents, but imo, even with his good wrestling, i won't be enough because GSP is going to be just too incredibly strong for him...
Maybe even GSP will begin to outwrestle him in the first three rounds, and IF Shields begins to fatigue, his takedowns will not be fully committed and GSP stuffs the takedowns, which in turn GSP begins to light up Shields with his lightning fast jabs
