War Captain America! | There was a shit ton of talk about Brett coming back and cries for him to retire...then after 1 or 2 good games the talk stops...then 1 or 2 bad games and the talk comes back.
Evander is a great example and I would compare him to Randy where he is getting hand picked opponents he has a chance of beating. Evander's last 7-8 opponents were either very slow or aging or both because Evander's greatest success was his stamina and output and ability to take thousands of shots off his massive forehead. Anyone with accurate quick hands caused his problems and at that point he was already a big draw and he had all his opponents hand picked.
I was pissed and complaining back after he fought Riddick Bowe....his management trying to pad his record with wins over the a fighter formerly known as Mike Tyson....but that was no Mike Tyson...that was a guy fighting for a payday to pay his debts....then fighting an even further past his prime Michael Moorer....then Lennox Lewis proved what I knew in the first fight (which should have been a Lewis win....then the 2nd fight only helped prove that further)...I guarantee that judges were paid off in that first fight. At that point he was done to me. But his management tried to build him up against John the Quietman Ruiz....a chubby 220lbs HW... Quote:

I will always have so much respect for him, however, if he beats Machida, I hope his head is in the fightgame all the way if he decides to stick around because there's only the top of the divison left for him... | If Couture gets over $250k for the fight, he will come back.
I would just like it if Randy was really competing to be the best LHW, not just fighting sparsely....but he has earned the right to decide.

Machida losing to Couture doesn't hurt him too much because the level of parity in the UFC LHW division means almost every top tier challenger has a couple losses and a probable decision loss to a legend on a three fight winstreak isn't anything to huff about. From there, Machida is still set up for a Forrest bout or T. Silva rematch....
If he loses, Couture goes out against one of the most complete and articulate fighters in Machida, giving Lyoto a solid bounceback against a still legit Couture, setting him up for one of several top contenders such as Bader, Jones, Forrest, Franklin or Rashad on his way back to Shogun.
I love this matchup and believe that Couture not only deserves it, but it's a brilliant move for the UFC all around.
I'll take Randy via a crushing clinchwar decision. |
If it was any other fighter I'd say no way he gets a title shot if he beats Machida. Look at his last three fights
He beat a boxer (James Toney)
Mark Coleman
Brandon Vera whom many think won that fight
now he gets Machida coming off two straight losses.
But its capt america we're talking bout so he just might get the title shot but in no way would he deserve it.
I'd throw him in with Rampage or the winner of Bones v Bader hell even the winner of Forest and Franklin before he gets a shot at the title.

It is a fight that I will watch, but I am pretty confident that Machida will bust Randy up. Couture has surprised me before but I just don't see it here. I think it will play out a bit like the Rashad fight. Too bad this never happend a few years back, I think Randy could find the right game plan to win but he will not be able to physically implement it.

Ignorant article. Saying that Randy has no business in the cage is pretty dumb considering he won his last 2.

Randy's wrestling will be too much for Machida imo. I don't think Lyoto will KO Randy, but as a huge Couture fan I have that fear that Randy will one day be viciously knocked out. And it will be a sad day. As long as his career doesn't end like Chuck Liddell's I will be happy.
I support Randy 100%.........go Captain America!

I could think of other fights I would rather see, but anything that keeps Couture away from making another bad movie, I am all for that.

This is an intriguing match-up for a number of reasons:
1. It's an unusual choice of opponent for Randy's 'final' fight. I'm not sure if it was just me but I kind of pictured his last fight being against a real legend of the sport, not a current title contender. I guess in this respect, his fight with Coleman would have been a great time to finish, as it was a battle of the Hall of Famers. But hey, I'm not complaining, I'll watch Randy fight anyone.
2. Randy has made it clear that he's not chasing titles anymore, and that he's competing because of his competitive nature and his love for fighting. However, a win over Machida (who only 18 months ago, was considered 'unbeatable') would be HUGE, because it would put him right up there in the mix for the title again, and I'm sure that Couture would find just one more shot difficult to resist, especially as he is showing no signs of being out of depth against young guys in their prime, even as he approaches 50.
3. Sure financially this fight would be great for both fighters, it would be a huge event and both fighters would benefit, but it seems a little irrelevant in this point in Machida's career. He's coming off two losses, having lost his title, been KO'd, and decisioned by a guy that many thought was simply not dedicated enough to compete at the highest level anymore in terms of title contendership (Rampage). Machida really needs a fight against a top level contender, a guy that is undoubtedly within the top 8 in the LHW division, to really get his supporters and fan-boys back on side.
However, with many top 10 LHW's tied up in other important bouts, I guess this fight is really one of the only matchups available to Lyoto at the moment and is actually quite logical. With Jones/Bader/Griffin/Franklin all ready to fight next month, Shogun out of the picture for now (not that Shogun/Machida 3 was an option) and Evans wanting to wait in line, there are very few other relevant opponents open for Machida at this time.
Personally I would have liked to have seen Rampage/Machida 2, and I'm sure a lot of people agree, and it's strange that this fight hasn't been put together. But hey, I'm sure we'll see it at some point. If the fans don't call for it, I'm sure Machida or Rampage will really want to put the dispute over the decision to bed.
