| Melvin Guillard says "Can you hear me now?"
Ok, I'm not going to bother starting an apology thread for Melvin's sake, because he doesn't need one. His haters are going to hate on him even if he does win the title this year. But I hope his performance Saturday served notice to those comfy armchair fortune tellers who think they can sum a man up before he even has a chance to prove himself. Melvin is a great example of how fighters like Junie Browning and Warmachine could have turned their lives around. This man chose the harder path and won the toughest fight of his life. The fight against himself. Congrats Melvin, keep it up and and Frankie may be "answering" or Grey may have to give up his lunch money, to you before too long....

I was thrilled with Melvin's whitewashing of Dunham. I've never especially been a Guillard fan, but since he joined with my longtime favorite MMA gym Jackson's MMA (nee Jackson's Submission Fighting), he's my boy.

I had Dunham pegged for last night not just because I think Dunham is a great fighter but because of the inconsistent performances of Guillard particularly when the spotlight is on him. His record in high profile fights against Stevenson, Diaz and Clementi made me question him. Everybody likes a redemption story, though. Last night Guillard fought towards his potential and that is a dangerous thing for the rest of the lightweight division as he is a very dynamic fighter. He's on a nice little streak here, I hope he can stay focused and continue in his success.

I thought Dunham would take him down and sub him. It was obvious that Melvin was way to fast for him. I just think it was a bad matchup for Dunham.

1. He let his hands go. Many would solely concern themselves with takedown defense and yet he kept punching.
2. He backed up the talk. Melvin said he was on a mission and he clearly is. No more excuses are necessary because he will be utilizing his strengths rather than just worrying about his opponents'.
Lastly, I do think that this victory signals a change in the 155lb landscape. He's got the power, speed, and commitment to create problems for anyone he faces.

That was such a good fight last night. I've always been a fan of Guillard because of his speed, KO power and precision.
That first knee against the cage was brutal. He annihilated Evan Dunham. |
