Yeah that was a huge difference. Where the hell do 400k worth of PPV buys go to? Man though, that was a hell of a fight and a hell of a build up to a fight.

MMA Payout comments on the difference between trending numbers and estimated numbers:

Trending numbers are based upon pre-fight indicators (e.g., live gate, television ratings, or Google search frequency) that are known to have a significant correlation with PPV buy rate numbers. When a fight is said to be "trending" towards a particular number the analyst is essentially saying that the pre-fight indicators are currently at levels that would suggest the PPV buyrate will be X. Trending numbers do not incorporate any sort of actual number received from a cable company.

Estimate numbers are based upon actual reports from cable companies. These typically take a little longer to report, because the cable companies need time to gather the purchase data from their systems. Then, once reliable base numbers have been gathered, the company will extrapolate those initial figures to give an estimate of what the overall card has likely produced from a buyrate perspective.
so basically they take a random guess based on the media.

RD actually brought up something,id like to pose to the boards. What kind of fan are you, and, what kind of fans are their?

Personally,I think theirs three kinds of fans(being simple here.)

Casual Fans-You watch the UFC and Strikeforce, and you know some fighters, understand a little about the sport itself.

Mid-Card Fans- YOu watch UFC and SF, and maybe some videos of DREAM. You know most fighters, and understand the sport and its rules.

Hardcore Fans- YOu watch UFC,SF,DREAM, Bellator, and even SharkFIghts, and any other card you happen to find a stream for. You post on a forum board, and understand the sport so well, your echoing Joe Rogan.

If you guys want some insight into the mind of a casual fan in terms of this card. Tons of people at my college, who were Jon Jones fans, DIDNT EVEN KNOW HE FOUGHT! I was watching the fight on my laptop in the cafeteria sunday, and people were like "oh is that Jon Jones? Hes definitely going to win the title someday, look at him, he is destroying that guy!" Then I said, "uhh, he already won the title. He won it last night, thats Shogun he is beating on" They were shocked, and didnt have a clue that there was even a UFC event last saturday. March Madness really consumes the public, to the point that almost no other sport is even relevant to talk about.

Also, I consider myself a mid-hardcore MMA fan. I dont watch bellator, or Dream cards unless big names are fighting, but I am VERY embedded in the sport, I analyze fights, I watch every relevant video online, I watch individual training videos, I know stats, I know moves(grappling), and it is indeed my favorite sport in the world to watch. I just cant believe that it took me so long to find out about it. I never heard of UFC or MMA untill 2007-8, but I have seen just about every singe relevant pride/ufc fight.

that pretty much hit the nail on the head. what i onsider a casual fan is people who say they are fans but dont really know much at all but still buy ppvs occasionally and are the ones who truly impact whether or not a card does well.

pretty much everyone on here in my eyes are hardcore fans. i think a hardcore fan is someone like you who analyzes sports breaks everything down and is knowledagble about what is going on and knows more about a lot more fighters. at least knows who the fighters on the main card are.

i myself, at least according to the analysis on here, am i very hardcore fan. i watch every org, watch fights old fights and interviews all the time, and live on this message board and sometimes i read mmaspot, sherdog and UG until it pisses me off so much that i cant take it anymore.

UFC will win some, and lose some. You know, just can't win them all.

Without actually acting a d!ck or an ass, on my part not yours, of course, I wanted to ask - have you been doing that on purpose? At first, I thought you were doing that on purpose, but after five million times, I'm starting to think otherwise. It's not that big of a deal, but it's starting to make both my eyes and head sore. Unless that's your intention, then carry on. I'll just have to find a way to look past that part of your posts, lol.

It's simple market saturation. I love MMA but I also am not going to start spending $50 every 2-3 weeks. I think the UFC should try to expand it's TV presence and keep PPV's to 8-12 events that are loaded top to bottom with good cards and good fighters.

I remember back in 2002-04 era we could only hope the PPVs did 't e200K+ per event, now that number is half of a terrible card.
