Diego Nunes has a message for you, Kenny Florian

Besides fighting in UFC, the American Kenny Florian also stars on the show ‘MMA Live’, on ESPN channel. During this week, Kenny took his chance when Dana White, UFC’s president, went to the show and asked him if he’d earn a title shot by defeating Diego Nunes at UFC 131, and Dana’s answer was “yes”.

Knowing about the “chat” through TATAME, Diego Nunes was firm. “Well, that’s a shame… It unfortunately will not happen”, joked Nunes, who’s training hard for their bout. “This final month will be pretty tough, I’ll give my best, I’ll break my own barriers”.

Florian took the opportunity to throw his name in the hat for the title picture when he had UFC head honcho Dana White on ESPN’s “MMA Live” show, which Kenny often co-hosts with Jon Anik and Franklin McNeil.

“…and Dana, I’m going to put you on the spot because I can. Will I get a shot? If I get by (Diego) Nunes, and (Jose Aldo) get’s by (Mark) Hominick, will I get the next shot after that?”, asked Florian.

“Oh here we go”, said White in his not-so subtle sarcastic tone.

“This is usually what the reporters would ask me, and now you’re the reporter asking me and the fighter…as far as you getting the title shot after (the UFC 129 fight)—everybody who’s watching knows where you stand in the sport and obviously if you can get in there then yes. If you make that weight Kenny, and then yeah, you’re probably going to get the next title shot.”

I feel bad for Kenny,because he one of those guys that is all hard work and preperation, while not as naturally skilled as some fighters, he works harder then most. And I think he could beat Edgar in a fight, but he keeps dropping the ball in the big fights, he needs to shake that. I would love to see him strike with Mark,but a fight with Aldo should be a kicking clinic.

makes sense. florian is definitely top level, but he was just outskilled and outclassed by penn, and maynard exposed a huge hole in his game. even if he can't beat aldo, he would be the measuring stick for every contender.

Florian needs to worry about making the weight first before even talking about getting the next title shot

Im not a big fan of this tbh. The guy hasnt even made the weight, let alone had a single win at that weight, and hes already talking about a title shot?

Kenny has been on so many title runs and has had soo many title fights, and he came up short on all of them. Why would they rush his title shot at FW? What happens if he gets derailed there once or twice? Stupid plan imo.

If he gets past Nunes, Kenny should still have to string together a couple decent wins imo before hes deserving of a title shot. A name isnt everything.

So the guy comes off a loss to Maynard, moves down to lower weight class, fights a mid-level fighter, and thinks he deserves a title shot with just one win in the division?

Sorry, as much as a great fighter Kenny is, he needs to put in more than just one fight to get a title shot. No way he should jump guys like Chad Mendes. I dont see him getting past Aldo or Hominick anyways. I think they would be too fast for him.

I'm pretty sure that Chad Mendes is getting the shot after Hominick, probably in the fall. But Kenny if he beats Nunes should get the next title shot after that in early '12.

only way i see him getting a shot off the bat if he destroys Nunes quickly but if he decisions him.. he has to go thru Hominick first.

From the UFC's point of view having Aldo fight Florian makes commercial sense in building Aldo's name recognition.

The average fan didn't watch WEC, but they know who Kenny Florian is; and they would sit up and take notice if they saw some guy kicking his ass.
