The only tier there is left is Matt or GSP, period. So someone is either a chump or a champ, and there's no middle ground?! That's ridiculous.

I take Diego seriously but Diego pretty much said his self that he wasn't ready for GSP yet.

Diego's a sentimental favorite to me because I like his energy, his relentlessness, and his belief in himself, and because he was the first fighter I "imprinted" on when starting to watch MMA...I don't believe he's the best fighter on earth or anything, he's just my favorite fighter.

However, in terms of record, results against steadily higher competition, etc, Penn is not more qualified than Diego to challenge for a title at this time.

He has beat everyone they put in front of him, but still he's just WEIRD.

I like Diego as a fighter, the dude has the desire and will to win mentally...which is about 90% of the game to me.
I would say the Top 3 Matt, BJ and GSP are pretty much on a tier by themselves and are pretty even, with GSP being a bit better than both Matt and BJ now.
But Diego needs to fight BJ or Matt before a title shot, I think it will be BJ.
I think Diego would probably lose a decision to any of the top 3 though.

BJ Penn's talent makes him a contender in that division. But he's had two title shots now, and against Matt and GSP he is a combined 1-2. He's lost what, 2 of his last 3 UFC fights, or 3 of 4, something like that?
Diego is 19-0 and has yet to fight (and/or lose to) either GSP or Matt. He's faced gradually tougher competition (including Karo, see my post earlier - Karo was actually in line for a title fight) and beaten them all...in terms of record, record against the best and performance against increasing competition, he has earned a title shot more than BJ Penn has earned one.
I'm not saying he's a better fighter or speaking ill of Penn :grinsmile26: I give BJ Penn mad props.
