| Carwin fooled doctor over ability to see at UFC 131
Carwin fooled doctor over ability to see at UFC 131 Quote:
Shane Carwin has admitted he lied to the doctor in order to avoid being stopped in UFC 131's main event.
Referee Herb Dean became concerned about one particular cut around Carwin's eye, and the heavyweight admits he could not see for the final five minutes.
A doctor was clearly seen asking Carwin if, when looking directly ahead, he could see the medic's hand out the corner of his eye. Carwin convincingly replied 'Yes', but he admits the truth was rather different.
"After the second round I knew I was in trouble," the American was quoted as saying by USA Today. "My nose made it impossible to breathe, my eyes were full of blood and Junior was still coming at me. When the ref stopped the fight in the third, I thought it was over.
"When the doctor came in the Octagon I knew it was going to be up to me to sell them on letting me continue. I knew I was in deep trouble but I also knew that all I needed was one clean shot.
"I wanted to keep myself in the fight. I wasn't able to see but I said I could and we continued."

While I never think you should admit something like that as I could see it causing issues about licensing, the dude certainly has heart. Can't image not being able to see or breathe and still having JDS looking to rip your head off.

There's a fine line between having "heart" and being reckless. It takes just as much heart to admit defeat, and admit that you are in no shape to defend yourself, as it does to go back out there and take additional (and unnecesary) damage. It takes a big man to admit that you lost and the fight should be stopped. And then you make statements in the media in order to make yourself look like a badass, even though you just got completely manhandled inside the octagon. He's not earning my respect here, just making himself sound foolish.

It is not that big of a deal guys. Almost all of the fighters I have been around would always say they are fine and want to keep going.
Remeber this was not training it was the start of the secord RD of a fight (main event)
As Carwin stated, he is always one clean punch away from a win

Wasnt it Rocky when Pauly told him to hit the one in the middle after he said theres three of em out there?? lol cmon most fighters in the world wouldnt admit that they cant see its just fighter mentality. Most people would curl up in the fetal position and cry in that situation but Shane still went out there and fought, mad respect!

I am with TBEAR & Luc1an. I respect the shit out of Carwin for havin either the heart, balls, or stupidity to gut that fight out, he looked like a zombie for fuck's sake, and I sure as hell hope nobody decides to fire up the 'Internet Inquisition' over the moral standing of his decision or how he needs to be punished or apologize or do community service for 'lying to the doctor', etc.

I've no doubt that Carwin was okay enough to continue, call it heart, cool, whatever, but admitting in public that you lied to the doctors via a sanctioned fight now opens a door for the future, a door that you probably wanted kept closed. And whilst doctors probably don't visit MMA boards, i'm rather positive that they watch ESPN, lol. That said, dumb move, IMHO - sometimes, it's best to just STFU!

Going to get beat up for this but let’s be honest. WHY do we ask a fighter if they can keep fighting.
Forget anything about him being next in line for a title shot if he wins . Just thank about what his win bonus is that’s more than enough to make any of us lie and say sure I can keep going
Even if the ref papers to have two thumbs and three middle fingers on one hand

why would he admit he lied to the doctor??? I wonder if this will affect doctor stoppages in the future now.
