I agree that it's a problem when the refs don't protect the fighter from unnecessary damage. Unfortunately, this idea doesn't take into consideration much of the Japanese Bushido code. It is far more honorable for a fighter to be beaten senseless or unconscious than for him to submit. Hell, I'm sure there would be a select few, Saku and Yoshida, who would almost be willing to die in the ring to continue their legacy. It's a really fine line to walk for them.
On the point about the crowd, have you ever been to a football, basketball, boxing, wrestling event in your life???? The hometown guys always get major crowd support. THAT'S WHAT YOU DO, SUPPORT YOUR GUYS. While you may be a fan of international guys, chances are, you would love to see the guy from your home town win. It's the nature of sports.
