I disagree with this. There needs to be real science involved in this such as determining what substance actually improves performance not just a list of thousands of substances half of which provide minimal benefit if any.

Regardless if it is a first offense no biggie a second... well i defer you to the brilliant Bush quote

"...fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again."

He has admitted that he took a supplement to help cut weight and didn't realize the diuretic in it was a banned substance. This didn't help his performance it just helped him cut the weight that he would have cut in a different way anyways. It's banned for safety because abusively using diuretics for weight cutting could become unsafe, not because it gives a performance advantage.
I agree with you on this.
The idea behind banning diuretics originated in the bodybuilding arena. They use it to cut up and remove the water bloat. Insulin is even on the list. I've always wondered how they test for high insulin levels, considering insulin spikes are very common when using creatine and other supplements.

Increased penalties would make little difference imo. What needs doing is a better testing procedure (only testing before fights is pointless as it will only catch idiots), and a worldwide governing body, ie worldwide punishment (steroids are currently allowed in most orgs).

Without these things changing, a professional fighter's risk/reward analysis will favour steroid use regardless of the severity of the punishment.

I agree. The reward and potential for beating the system are far too high to deter usage. I do agree that they need to implement random tests during the training period between fight signing and fight date. That would be a strong deterrent. I'm not sure if AC's have that authority, but governing bodies obviously do.

I think they should have to wear a hat and a t-shirt saying "I am a substance abuser" then they should have to go house to house in their nieghboorhood and tell everyone what they have done.
