There is just no scenario where a fighter should "win" a fight when he spent the last two rounds getting dominated and the last round in full mount. This was a draw if there ever was one. Rd 5 was utter domination by Rua. Rd three was not even close to 10-8 lopsided even though Rua ate some giant bombs, as the overall round wasn't lopsided.

I think some people are giving Shogun too much credit for the last round.
Yes...complete domination in top control, but he had very very few punches that did connect properly, and although Hendo was strictly on defense and I was one of 4 dudes screaming at the TV for Dan to defend, I still felt confident in Dan's ground game. Hendo was never in that much trouble. He never had a choke where Hendo was about to go out, or an arm that he nearly broke. He had dominant position, but was so gassed he barely did anything with it.
Apart from Lil Nog, only Anderson was able to submit him. His RNC defense is top notch (like David L'ouiseau) and even though he was mounted for a good 45 seconds to a minute in the round, but all Shogun could do is turn him to his side and connect with about 2 solid punches (and 5-6 shots that missed their mark)
There is no way I judge can score the third round 10-9 for Hendo and score the last round 10-8 for Shogun.
At least in Bonnar's fight, he was completely frustrating and actually striking Kingsbury. Bonnar on top was constantly moving and going for the finish and actually had gas in the tank. I think if Shogun was busier and had more gas, he could have made it a 10-8 round.
He had better stamina than his horrible conditioning in the Coleman fight and the first Forrest fight.
Shogun was completely gassed, only a little less gassed then Hendo.
I think it is hard for anyone to score the fight for Shogun, but some people think it could have been a draw, but aren't surprised it went to Hendo.
Simply looking at Shogun's face....Hendo won.
If there was a rematch, I don't like Hendo's chances. Shogun always does better the second time around. Well, he did against Machida and Forrest and Coleman
Lots of options for Shogun now....Rashad, Tito, Rampage, Bader or Thiago Silva when he comes back.
For Hendo, who knows. I would prefer a catch weight fight at 190 with someone. Maybe a Rich Franklin or Tito at 205

And the 2011 "best chin in MMA" award goes too...Shogun. Ironically, many people thought Dan had the best chin (myself included). But I think Shogun absorbed the harder shots last night.

I don't see how round 5 was more dominant for Shogun then 1 or 3 were for Hendo. Shogun had some success in round 1 hurting Hendo late, but the first 2 minutes looked like it was going to be a short fight in Hendo's favor. Round 3 was VERY close to being stopped, the only reason it kept going is because of Shogun's reputation. If it were 2 unknown up and comers or a journeyman against Hendo it would have been stopped no question. In my mind, no way round 3 isn't 10-8(but apparently none of the judges saw it that way).
Round 4 was pretty even, I could have seen it as 10-10 but I personally thought Shogun eeked it out by landing the better strikes. Round 5 was all Shogun, but I honestly don't think getting mount several times makes for a 10-8 round. He landed some decent punches, but nothing close to what Hendo landed throughout most of the fight. I think 10-8 is the wrong scoring for a round dominated by position, I know a lot of people will disagree with me, but I don't think people are being subjective if they see round 5 as 10-8 and then call round 3 a 10-9.
I absolutely think the right guy won the fight, I think i was pretty clear cut, and I love 5 round main events.

If Fitch/Penn round 3 was 10-8 I don't see how this round wasn't 10-8. Definitely a lot more dominant in favor of Shogun.

The thing is shogun reversed with a leg lock and got a takedown after getting knocked down in round 3 and easily won the rest of the round, and the round was even up until the 25-30 seconds of the beating shogun took. Shogun also got the knockdown in the first.
Shogun completely dominated the 5th round for the entire 5 minutes...
Shogun outlanded Hendo 191-113 and had 5 takedowns compared to 1.

Wow. I just rewatched the fight. Hendo is my favorite fighter and Shogun has always been a guy I have liked. I mean how badass are all of his fights. After this I have a whole new respect for Shogun.
I was thinking give Dan vs Suga, but now I am thinking they do a rematch of this, because I agree it should have been a draw. So they could do machida vs jones, winner fights Rashad, and winner of that fights winner of shogun vs hendo.
What an awesome fight.

Do you think the crowd actually had an effect on the outcome? I actually heard someone yell, "stand them up" in the fifth round. There was about two minutes left and Shogun was in full mount. Stand them up??? Maybe that it why it was not 10-8 like it should have been. I mean how dumb do you have to be to think they should be stood up in full mount.
Anyone else think the crowd could have swayed them?
