I can't say I'd agree with Dana either. You've had boxing main events on cable showing both men bloody and battered after the fight. And these fights average from 10 to 12 rounds. These kinds of fights will happen on network tv sooner or later, it's better to show them the bloody glory right off the bat, then try to "ease" them in. People who like fighting will love those kinds of fights, those who don't like fighting will never love the sport anyway. Draw the line in the sand and let the true fight fans cross over.

It was in my view (and in yours judging by what you said in another thread) one of the greatest fights I've ever seen, and I'd like to think that it captured a few fans skirting around the edges of the sport, but a slightly more technical back-and-forth war, maybe with some incredible ground work, would have surely interested more fans. | I'm thinking Guida/Benson would have been spot on and if DW DID have a time machine he would put that fight on before JDS/Cain and this thread wouldnt even exist.

Ok, I agree with Danan here, let's think about this:
the fight would not have went to round 5 had it been on Fox - it would have been stopped, Big John McCarthy would have stopped it (or would have been instructed to stop it) when Either fighter was taking too many unanswered shots
Fox insisted on Big John to ref the fight, everyone knows Rosenthal is now the number 1 MMA ref and lets fights go on a bit longer when the stakes are higher
The state of Shoguns face was worse than any recent high level boxers face after a big fight, not a good advert when u have all the boxing promoters just waiting to rip the sport to bits
The fact it was such a high profile event on FOX meant that so many media outlets were covering it, imagine every tv channel displaying the barbaric sport that is MMA with the pic of Shoguns face, it would turn off too many fans that think MMA is barbaric
The Cain vs JDS fight left so many questions like "are all MMA fights so short?", "I didn't see any blood, is this sport really that bad?" and "What are the differences between this and box

The Cain vs JDS fight left so many questions like "are all MMA fights so short?", "I didn't see any blood, is this sport really that bad?" and "What are the differences between this and boxing apart from the fact you can hit the on the ground?". These questions are great from a UFC point of view, as the curiosity will bring viewers back for answers, they will also allow conversations between friends generate other viewers as people who missed the 1st broadcast will be more compelled to view show 2 now that a friend has said it was not bad.
I reckon if the Hendo vs Shogun fight was on, only the fans that saw it anyway would have enjoyed it, meaning no growth and a wasted oppourtunity that set MMA back a few years.

....they are going to see a bloody fight eventually.....why not just get it over with? Unless you plan on having really quick trigger stoppages for Fox. You won't be able to hide the bloody side of MMA from the masses for very long. If you won't mainstream network exposure, you better be ready to answer those questions sooner or later.
