Nick Diaz Details The Story Behind His Elite Level Conditioning Nick Diaz Details The Story Behind His Elite Level Conditioning Quote: Quote:
"Fighters are afraid of conditioning, they are afraid of getting tired, but I don't want to have anxiety or be afraid of anything. I can go 100 percent out there and never have to worry about getting tired. Everybody says fighting is 90 percent mental, and it's true. Knowing you can go 15 minutes or 25 minutes without any problem can help you sustain that mental advantage over your opponent."

"I just like to race. It gives me something to build for. During the triathlon season, I'll probably race every two weeks. I get stronger and stronger when building up to the race. After a race, a lot of people will crash and take their foot off the gas, but I'll keep building and building until I have to fight. I have a reason not to crash, and I try to keep the ball rolling until fight night."
Quote:
"Doing the races keeps me in shape. By the time a fight comes around, I'm already in shape and ready to go. I don't have to get in shape for fights. When I am in the gym, I train mixed martial arts, I don't need to train to get in shape. I am already in shape."
That doesn't mean that during camp he completely forgets about his triathlon workouts though. Quote:
"If I'm not running, I'm going to go for a swim or go on a bike ride. I don't like being stationary at any point during training."

If more people trained like this we'd hardly have boring/gassed out fights.

If everybody trained like this we'd have less fighters not making weight or dropping big numbers to make weight.

It is a different philosophy of fighting; Diaz places toughness, cardio, and technique over speed and power. For a lot of guys, they need that huge amount of muscle mass to be competitive. Take away the speed and power from guys like Lombard and AJ and you're not left with much else.
The more I learn about Diaz, the more I think he's actually a pretty smart guy. Like how he says he's always in really good shape, that gives him way more time in training camp to focus on technique. And, obviously it's worked for him. I don't know if we've seen anyone grow as much as a fighter in the past 5 or so years, except maybe GSP.

Bones in there. I'm no fan at all but the leaps he's took in his technique during his short career is really mind boggling. Lol and i can't stress enough how much I am not a fan but gotta give credit where its due. That being said war Diaz!

At first glance he comes off as a complete idiot. But when you start looking at the way he trains for fights, hell, he may be a complete idiot in some aspects of life, but damn, Diaz is a genius in the art of fighting AND preparing for a fight.

I'd say it's more of a form of ADHD he doesn't know how to relax. Even if you try to be nice to him he'll turn it to hate you to get more drive. I will say he has curbed his drive towards training/working out over just doing drugs to relax. Ya he does like his weed but that one of the lesser evils you can do.

His cardio is one of the best in MMA, probably the best.
Being said that, I hope Condit knocks his ass out.
