Default Refs at Fight Night 8

I don't want to make this a ref bashing thread. I just wanted to bring up some of the calls the happend at UFN 8.

First I thought BJM, overall did a good job with the Herring fight. He knew when to stand them up and when to give it alittle more time. Sure with the lack of subs and gnp by o'brien he could have stood them up sooner, once o'brien established he wasn't doing anything he did. Herring felt comfertable enough to throw his hands up and look over at John since he knew O'Brien wasn't doing shit.

Then we have the Franca fight. The ref in that fight is probably one of these boxing refs, he was always standing at wierd angles that made it so he couldn't see shit. And he game them zero time on the ground. everytime they hit the floor he would start telling them he was going to stand them up. It takes more then 5 seconds to do something on the ground and even when franca advanced from guard to half to side control he was telling him he was going to stand them up. This is also the ref who called the rashad vs salmon fight and ddin't take salmon's mouth piece out after he was ko'd

And we have the Herman Price fight. AGain the ref was in a terible position. He was behind the fighters when Herman had Price's back. Herman switches and catches the armbar deep. Price was tapping for way way to long before it was stopped. When it was stopped Herman appologized to Chris for holding it for so long. Chris seemed to totallty understand why, being it took the ref a few seconds to stop the fight. Chris was probably very very close to having his arm broke because of the ref.

Florida's athletic commision has to get better trained ref's if they are going to have local ref's incharge of these fights.

inconsistent...

1) Franca was definitely working on the ground and was stood up too quick IMO.
2) O'Brien was not doing anything. Honestly, if someone is not doing anything repeatidly I think they should be stood up faster the next time.
3) I agree with you other comments...just plain out of position.

I agree with most of what has been said, I was so mad when the ref kept telling franca to work I thought he was doing a pretty good job trying to push the pace. I' not sure what to think about the herring fight, its a tough call to stand someone up when thay have the mount but in that case he really wasn't doing anything from the position. I cant believe he doesn't know how to ground and pound comming out of the punishment camp.

everyone keeps saying how the herring fight should have been stood up but IMO herring didn't deserve to get bailed out like that. all he was doing the entire time jake was on top of him was asking to be stood up and bitching and complaining on bottom. i recognize that jake didnt do much of anything but herring looked horrible. he looked like he wasnt even trying to stop jake from getting mount.

I agree with the OP.

When all is said and done, Herring looked horrible and O'Brien's performance in this fight and his previous fight against Shockman should prompt a meeting with Dana White and the referees to put a stop to this crap.

Amen brother............If fighters want to lay on top of someone and stall, don't just stand them up. Take a little of Pride's rules and give them a warning, then start taking points. I'm not a fan of docking a fighter's pay like Pride does but at least they make the fighters fight, they don't allow someone to just lay their to protect a lead on the judge's point card.

Amen, if implemented we could call it the Josh Koscheck Rule.

TheBranMan: "the one bald ref looked like sloth from the goonies."

He was the ref from the Bodog series where I thought he did an amazing job, especially when keeping the fighters from getting tangled in the ropes.

It's tough work to have to reposition the fighters when they get too close to the ropes. Especialy here in North America where fighters and fans aren't used to it.

I don't feel that the UFC refs excersize as much control as a referee should. Even Big John tries to be as unobtrusive as possible. The referees are there to prevent injury, and the UFC fighters aren't as mindful of them as fighters from other organizations are of their officials.

However, others might suggest that the less attention a ref gets, then the more the fight is determined by the fighters.

Your thoughts?
