I used to play tournament chess when younger (don't laugh, chess is more similar to MMA than you might think, but with less blood ), and naturally folks wanted to know, what is the difference between a good player, a great player, and a legendarily strong player.
Any time this question was posed of a grandmaster (highest level chessplayer), the answer was always highly similar and was essentially: the legendary player just has a little bit stronger/deeper understanding of the essential core of chess, the heart and soul of the chess struggle, than your average great player.
When I see Fedor fight, that's exactly what I see; he just seems to understand or grasp the MMA fight game at a deeper level than anyone else and it makes him always seem a step quicker than everyone, one move beyond them, one level above.
There are things you can train and then there are things that just are or aren't. Fedor might be someone who has been trained to a great level, but additionally just has this ability to grasp the nature of the game better than other fighters.

He said in an interview that he doesn't think about winning the fight or much less the other fighter. He said he thinks of the fight as each particular moment and not the outcome and does what he knows best for thoes particular instaces. Now that my friends is Focus and certainly a pointed mind. That and some of thoes funky russian training methods, and I see why he is great.
