Alan Belcher says he is in no rush to prove he is in top form, and believes his year-long fight sabbatical has had a positive effect on his career.

Speaking on Monday’s edition of MMA Hour, Belcher claimed putting his health and family first in 2010 is beginning to pay dividends. Belcher withdrew from a match-up with Demian Maia in August of that year after undergoing emergency eye surgery, and only returned at the tail-end of 2011 – around the same time he and his wife welcomed a new addition to their family.

Looking back, Belcher remarked that the time off has helped him find an inner peace: “I had all that animosity because I was trying so hard. I just wanted to get ahead and go so fast. The time I’ve taken off in the last few years, it's helped me grow so much as a person and as a fighter that it was really valuable time off. Slowing down has really helped me out a lot.”
