Akihiro Gono announces MMA retirement following Bellator 67 loss

Quote:
One of MMA's longest and most colorful careers has come to an end.

Following his loss to Bellator lightweight champion Michael Chandler at Friday's Bellator 67 event, Akihiro Gono (32-18-7) announced his retirement from the sport.

The Japanese veteran made the announcement in a post-event press conference following the MTV2-televised event.

At Casino Rama in Ontario, Canada, Gono proved no match for recently crowned titleholder Chandler in their headlining non-title fight. Chandler connected with a straight right that floored Gono, and he then unloaded a lightning-quick flurry of punches to prompt the TKO stoppage just 56 seconds into the fight.

An emotional Gono received a standing ovation when he made the retirement announcement afterward.

The first times they replayed the fight against Chandler, I thought it was a horrible quick stoppage. Then they finally showed another angle. Then I agreed with it.

I would love to see him keep fighting. But not guys like Chandler who easily looked 15 lbs heavier than Gono.

Gono still has skills and experience. Just not the chin he used to have.

I could see him fighting again....but only in local shows in Japan.

Probably one of the most underrated fighters in MMA history. This guy pretty much fought everyone there was to fight.

Hughes
Salaverry
Ninja Rua
Sonnen
Shogun Rua
Henderson
Lombard
Mousasi
Fitch
Hardy
Sakurai
Chandler

I am sure I am missing some notable names.

I guess his training partner from Genki Sudo's gym, Grabaka, Kazuo Misaki is the new Gono and just as impressive a list of opponents:

Chris Lytle
Nate Marquardt (twice)
Ricardo Almeida
Jake Shields
Jorge Patino
Ed Herman
Dan Henderson (twice)
Phil Baroni
Paulo Filho
Dennis Kang
Frank Trigg
Yoshihiro Akiyama
Siyar Bahadurzada
Joe Riggs
Jorge Santiago(twice)
Melvin Manhoef
Paul Daley

Insane list of opponents for both of them

was really sad to see, almost felt like BFC brought him in as a "name" opponent for chandler to manhandle and thats exactly what happened.
on the upside, was great to see gono fight live, tho i was a bit disappointed he didnt have any sort of flashy entrance
