Nate Diaz gets title shot, will wait for winner of Benson Henderson-Frankie Edgar II

Quote:
Nate Diaz is your next lightweight No. 1 contender.

UFC president Dana White confirmed at Saturday night's UFC on FOX 3 post-event press conference that Diaz did indeed earn a shot at the 155-pound title with his win over Jim Miller.

And while there were reports that Anthony Pettis might still stand in Diaz's path to a title shot, White said Diaz was offered and agreed to stay on the sidelines until he can face the winner of Benson Henderson vs. Frankie Edgar II, which takes place later this year.

"I'm just going to wait it out and see what happens," Diaz said at the press conference.

White first promised Diaz a title shot during a conference call this past Wednesday. However at a pre-event press conference the following day, he put a little doubt on the potential when he admitted he didn't realize how long of a layoff that would mean for Diaz, with Henderson and Edgar tentatively scheduled to fight in August.

However Diaz, who in the evening's main event became the first fighter to ever earn a stoppage win over Miller, said he's unconcerned with the layoff. Championship bids don't come easily, and he recognizes the importance of cashing in on that ticket.

"I'm down for whatever," Diaz said. "Whatever they say, but [waiting] sounds great to me."

Wrestling is Nate's kryptonite. Bendo will take him down at will and Frankie is way too fast for him.

I disagree. Diaz will have a reach advantage over either, and his boxing is excellent and just getting better. His jui jitsu is superior to either of those guys if the fight hits the ground. I think Nate will be the first Diaz to wear UFC gold.

Diaz earned it in my books. I really hope they don't hijack it though and try and put together Diaz/Pettis for the summer(which I wouldn't be shocked if they did). I fucking love Jim Miller and goddamnit if Nate Diaz didn't earn major props from me last night. I watched the fight with my fiancee and afterwards we were both talking about how cool and different the potential matchups for Nate would be depending on who comes out of Bendo/Edgar 2.....

Diaz looked absolutely SICK while Jim looked once again, like he didn't come in with all too much of a gameplan and strategy to circumvent Nate's style(similar to his approach in the Bendo fight) and he paid for it. I think a Frankie/Diaz faceoff is just a wild affair and kinda a toss-up in my eyes, while I think Bendo puts a sandwich on Diaz's back all night long(as Jim Miller's TDs aren't the caliber of Bendo's) and Nate's TDD hasn't been tested as it has by those in the past.

Much rather see Frankie/Nate for fun, but I get the feeling that Bendo probably gets the same results as he did in his first meeting with Frankie and thus, we may be seeing Bendo/Diaz....I also think UFC is clamoring to EVENTUALLY put on Bendo/Pettis 2 on FOX, so I can see many things changing from now up until the next LW title fight after Frankie/Bendo II.

I think Diaz would take Frankie

Bendo I think might be a different story though, he's much bigger and stonger, and I personally think if any top guy at LW can beat Nate right now it would be Bendo

Diaz is a stud, and I honestly think he can do bigger things than Nick can at this point IMO

I am quite impressed with Nate in his past 3 fights, and how can anyone not be impressed with him submitting Miller. Currently, he is ahead of everyone else in my mind for a title shot, and his fights with Bendo and Frankie would be quite interesting. Bendo could really stifle his ground game whereas Frankie could stick and move like Condit did to Nick. However, once Diaz (both of them really) get going, fighters just succumb to that pressure.

I also really appreciated Nate's sportsmanship after the last 3 fights. I would like to see how he handles losses instead of wins though. That's where the Diaz brothers (especially Nick) has failed.

As good as Diaz has looked in his last few fights, he still has a huge hole in his game, and thats wrestling. Miller got some sloppy TD's in that fight but Nate did sweep him after, I dont see Bendo or Edgar being swept, and could easily grind him from top position. I dont see Henderson in much trouble, Edgar would be the easier fight, and I bet he is rooting for Frankie.
