Ronda Rousey will defend her Strikeforce bantamweight title for the first time later this summer.

According to sources close to Strikeforce, Rousey will meet top contender Sarah Kaufman at a yet-to-be announced Strikeforce card in August. No date or location has been finalized yet.

Rousey (5-0) defeated Miesha Tate in March to capture the Strikeforce women's 135-pound belt. The win capped off an impressive year which saw her win her first five fights in a combined time of 7:15.

Kaufman (15-1) secured her spot as the No. 1 contender when she defeated Alexis Davis on the same card in March. The Canadian has won three in a row since losing the 135-pound belt to Marloes Coenen in Oct. 2010.

The card will air on Showtime.

Strikeforce returns on May 19 with an event headlined by Daniel Cormier vs. Josh Barnett and Gilbert Melendez vs. Josh Thomson.

Ronda by round 1 arm bar.

Sara did not really impress me in her last outting, I am sure she can out box Ronda but we all know what happens when Rousey gets a hold of you.

Ronda was going to try to strike with Tate and realized that a hug and throw would be a better option. I see the same thing happening again. Ronda will get tagged a couple times in order to get the fight to the mat. But, the thing is... we still haven't seen how much of a chin Ronda actually has, which is a testament to how skilled she is.

Rousey vs Kaufman slated for August. Kaufman's arm rehab slated for September.

Me too, Kaufman was my favorite WMMA fighter for a while, she doesn't have a great finish percentage but huge heart and really wears people down along with probably the best technical boxing in WMMA.

Defensive grappling is of course huge in this fight, Kaufman is going to be a huge underdog since she has a recent submission loss but I think she definitely has the ability to upset.

So here's a 'big picture' question regarding women's MMA: Do female fighters, in general, command 1-punch KO power? I don't think Ronda needs to have an iron chin, because the only serious power threats are retired (Carano) or fraudulent (Cyborg). I draw parallels between differences in Men's/Women's basketball and MMA. Women's basketball is more technical, but no dunking and 'above the rim' action.

If Kaufman can't finish, then she will get finished. Defensive grappling will only prolong the inevitable--unless she gets a Johnny Cash tattoo and starts training with Alan Belcher.

You make a good point about power in WMMA, which I think is a big reason why we see so many submission artists at the top and no KO artists besides Cyborg and Carano, who both had massive size advantages in the majority of their fights.

The thing about submission fighters is if they are constantly getting punched in the face, their skills diminish. If Kaufman avoids getting submitted while consistently causing damage, Rousey's offensive ability will be significantly lower. There is always a chance of pulling off the hail mary sub, but in most cases if someone is getting punched in the face for 15 minutes, the last 10 minutes will just be more face punching.

Your fucking off your rocker if you think she was going into that fight looking to keep it on the feet.
I don't give a rat ass what she said in any interview. You think Tate thought for one red second Ronda was not going to try and get her down and get an arm.
It's not like Ronda took the easy way out. Tate's ground game is not weak by any means.

Um.. re-watch the fight. Ronda got smacked around by Tate while Ronda was finding her range. Obviously Ronda aimed to get it to the ground, but she took some shots while trying to setup the takedown.
