| Faber wants Interim Title VIDEO | With Cruz Out Urijah Faber Wants Interim Title Shot | MMA News UFC 148 Update: Dominick Cruz Out - YouTube
***Apologies for not embedding into thread, uncertain of how to do so***
My personal opinion is I completely disagree with Faber. Give Cruz time to heal/recover & then he can fight him for the title. If Faber wants to stay busy in between so be it, that would be the risk of being top contender & still taking fights.
In the video he states something to the affect that Cruz has been out for a year & a half (I think he meant will be) so he believes that justifies it. Honestly I am about done with interim titles. Fight till there is a top contender when the champ is ready to return, not have a fake/paper champ till the real champ comes back to unify the titles.
Side note, I really believe Faber is a talented & good fighter...but I'm about done with seeing him fighting for any title, it's worse than Florian (though Faber has at least held a title).

But, where we differ is I think if the champ gets injured and cannot defend his belt within 8-9 months then they should be stripped of their belt. That way the belt doesnt sit on the sidelines for over a year (which seems to happen a lot) and when the champ is healthy he can fight to get his belt back.

You know, I'd be perfectly ok with that idea (as you've stated) as long as the champ get's a crack at it in his immediate fight to return.
I'm just sick of interim titles, it reminds me too much of boxing with multiple champs for the same weight class.

I like the stripping idea with a guaranteed title shot. No interm title, no jam at the top

I think its the best way to handle the injury/interim title situation.

i dont see the point of beating another contender then calling yourself the best. cause you arent, the injured champ still is.
interm titles have their purpose sometimes, but people like faber (and kos) who fought for the title not that long ago and lost, then call for an interm title at the first hint of opportunity really bugs me. and someone manage to argue they deserve or earned it.

Two things really solidify my stance on Faber's specific claim to an interim title:
1. He just lost to Cruz quite convincingly less than a year ago and has approximately ONE win since he had his shot. He hasn't filled his resume with a diverse set of victories to prove his case for title shots, he's merely handed them.
2. He's already HAD and LOST 3 title shots in his past 7 fights, which to me, is beyond a ridiculous number of opportunities without ever closing the deal. As far as I'm concerned, everything after the second Brown loss has been served up to Faber akin to a freeride in a fancy car.
Therefore, I could give a fuck about Faber getting an interim title fight because it's not like he's won a legit world title fight in years and has been spoonfed shots from ZUFFA, rather than consistently making a case for title contention over a period of more than one or god forbid TWO fights...
I don't think Faber's a worthy title challenger at the moment, I don't think he beats Cruz(rinse, lather and repeat of their last showdown) when the time comes and why the hell should he stake claim on the title in the meantime, when he's done very little to earn it.
If you can't tell, I hate how Zuffa handles Faber.

A win over Barao/Macdonald gives Faber a solid argument for a title shot, which he doesn't really have now. A win over Faber gives Barao/Macdonald a solid case for a title shot as well, which neither of them really have now (Barao maybe). Seems like the perfect time for a #1 contender fight anyway. Plus this card already as a great main event so it's not like it needs more gold involved to be a success.
