| Dr. says Chael's Hypogonadism caused by past steroid use UFC Quick Quote: Doctor says Chael Sonnen's hypogonadism is caused by past steroid use - MMAmania.com Quote:
"Was Chael Sonnen a big time collegiate wrestler? Yes he was. I'm going to opine and say to you, there's no way in the world you get to the level of collegiate wrestling that Chael Sonnen was at, with hypogonadism. Let me explain to you why. Hypogonadism means that the testes did not produce enough testosterone for one to normally mature. He wasn't on TRT as a teenager. He became this big, muscled up monster and NCAA wrestler with hypogonadism? Hell no. The truth of the matter is, you could never get to that level, because you're not going to have the muscle mass and strength to get you there. They're going to run you over. Your body will not allow you to develop enough muscle and strength to compete at your size. If he has hypogonadism, it's from one thing, and one thing only, because he treated himself with steroids in the past, and wrecked his testes. That's it." | Well let the haters have at it, im a huge Chael fan but this doesnt really stun me

Quite possible, but not as clear cut as the article wants to claim. Maybe I'm remembering things wrong, but didn't Chael claim that his testicles either didn't ever drop, or didn't fully develop? (I swear that's what he said at his original "trial", but I don't really pay attention to other dude's balls). Regardless, I fail to see how an educated doctor can make a diagnosis without actually physically examining someone.

If the doc hasn't even met chael I have a hard time taking this as anything more that an educated opinion. He may be right, but I can't take it as fact.

Curious as to what this doctor thinks about the affects of the weight demands, tournaments that require multiple weigh-ins over a few days time (some were multiple in one day), and the constant malnourishment and dehydration that high school and collegiate wrestlers must endure throughout their entire carrier?
Chael had a history of minor illnesses, most likely from the malnourishment and dehydration, that he endured in college but was still able to compete. And if he was juicing in college, I would assume that he was a ninja at it, because I don't recall him being popped by the NCAA during his years of competition.
Who knows? It's all speculation at this point. He obviously got busted post Silva fight due to relying on a verbal admittance, which wasn't proper p&p. However, he's in the good this go-around thanks to some handy-dandy paperwork. Amazing is the world in which we live in.

BP | I would also like to hear his thoughts on those things. Weight cutting really fucks with the body.

Weight cutting causes severe metabolic imbalances and without a doubt a fucked up metabolism can mess up hormone production.
Steroids are not the only cause of hypogonadism.
A doctor who has never treated or read the medical records of an individual does NOT know anything about the medical history of a person. It is like saying you know the history of a country without picking up a book, like many choose to do when discussing Iran. |

A doctor who has never treated or read the medical records of an individual does NOT know anything about the patient. | I wanted to say that, but I don't know enough about hypogonadism to feel confident in saying that the doctor was just speculating. You seem smart though so...YEAH WHAT HE SAID!

For a guy to compete his whole life at an incredibly high level to just out of nowhere lose his ability to produce testosterone naturally is very suspicious. A lot of people throw around the idea that weight cutting causes this, but there is not really any evidence out there that this is true outside of it happening to boys who cut weight during their formative years. And those guys look nothing like Chael Sonnen, since the primary symptoms are stunted growth and a lack of muscle mass.
It is actually very common for people who abuse anabolic steroids to get hypogonadism. The guy is not talking out of his ass, if you see someone who is carrying lots of muscle their whole lives and then all of the sudden they have hypogonadism, it's a safe bet they abused anabolic steroids.

Another possibility is that some people who use trt really don't need it. I'm willing to bet that anyone who isn't producing the highest levels of testosterone naturally can go get a prescription from a shady doctor just by saying they feel tired all the time, even if their testosterone levels are not terribly low. Much like anyone can see a doctor in certain states and say they have back pains and get a medical marijuana license with no questions asked.
