Default Manager: If Mark Munoz Wins at UFC on Fuel TV 4, ‘He Has to Be the No. 1 Contender’

If Mark Munoz Wins at UFC on Fuel TV 4, ‘He Has to Be the No. 1 Contender’

Quote:
Michael Bisping has made his case should Chael Sonnen win after their fight was closely contested back in January. Tim Boetsch believes a win at UFC 149 should put him in the crosshairs of a title shot.

And let’s not forget former Bellator middleweight champion Hector Lombard who was calling out Anderson Silva on the day he signed with the UFC.

The name that hasn’t been talked about quite as much is the man who will fight in the main event at UFC on Fuel 4, and likely has the strongest case of all the contenders to make a run at the belt.

Mark Munoz will enter his bout on July 11 against Chris Weidman on a four-fight win streak, and victorious in seven out of his last eight bouts.

Add to that the fact that Munoz was the fighter originally scheduled to face Sonnen in a No. 1 contender’s bout back in January before an elbow injury forced him off the card and into the surgical room. But now that he’s healthy and ready to return to action, Munoz’s manager is making the case that there’s only one name that should be uttered when speaking about No. 1 contenders at 185 pounds.

That name is Mark Munoz.

“If and when Mark wins this fight, he has to be the No. 1 contender,” said Mike Roberts of MMA Inc. when appearing on MMAWeekly Radio.

UFC officials haven’t told Munoz or his manager that he is guaranteed a shot at the belt should he win, but there are a lot of signs that seem to point in that direction.

Beyond the fact that he was already scheduled in a previous No. 1 contender’s fight, Munoz faces Weidman just a few days after the rivalry between Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen will hopefully come to a close.

“It makes the most sense and they’re fighting four days apart,” Roberts stated. “I think that speaks volumes.”

Munoz also faces an undefeated phenom in Chris Weidman, who has looked virtually unstoppable so far in his young UFC career. If Munoz can get past Weidman and make it five wins in a row, that would appear to be the perfect scenario for him to face the winner of Silva vs. Sonnen II.

He would without a doubt be the #1 contender, but one could argue that if Tim beats Lombard then he would be deserving of a title shot also. Bisping should be 2-3 straight wins over top 10 tallent before his name is even mentioned in the same sentence. As a title shot.

^See what I did there?

The winner of this fight and the winner of the Lombard/Boetsch fight will both have good arguments for a shot. I would say match them up against each other but the UFC and whoever the MW champ is might want to decide on a #1 contender faster than that.

munoz would definitely have a strong case. i would have no problem with munoz getting a shot if he wins. on the same token, i wouldnt have a problem w/ him taking one more fight either.

Munoz really needs a win over a top 10 guy imo. It seems like guys start calling for title shots before really going through contender fights.

Guys like Bisping, Belfort, Munoz, Boetch and Lombard need to be fighting each other (instead of fighting up and comers) to sort this mess out. You have a lot of guys building up steam, but they aren't fighting each other (other than lombard and boetch)...and you have a lot of guys talking about title shots who have lost their fights against top ten opposition.

Book Bisping vs. Belfort when they both heal, and have Munoz/Weidman winner or Boetch/Lombard winner square off in a title eliminator fight.

Another idiot demanding to be a number 1 contender without beating a top 5 opponent. This seems to be what everyone wants at MW today: being the number 1 contender despite being mediocre.

Name a guy who unquestionably deserves it more. I'll go get a sandwich, and wait. Take your time.

I'm really not being to try to be a Dick if you just forgot to list it, but bisping did lose to sonnen right. I know he pretends like it didn't happen, and he is next in line for a title fight, but it did happen right? right? Or an I living out the worlds crappiest total recall ever where the only thing different is one fight that I thought I watchEd never happened. Help me please.
