UFC on FX 4's Ramsey Nijem wanted to give back fine after opponent missed weight

There are all sorts of little rules Ramsey Nijem (6-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC) isn't particularly keen on in MMA.

One, he said, forced him to keep a 20-percent purse deduction awarded him by the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board after opponent C.J. Keith (8-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) missed weight by one pound at this past Friday's UFC on FX 4.

"The commission said that's their way of making sure fighters makes weight," Nijem told MMAjunkie.com Radio (MMAjunkie.com Radio | MMAjunkie.com). "He's a respectful kind of person, and after he didn't make weight, I was like, 'Well, it's a frickin' pound.' But they didn't let me."

Nijem respected the decision of the referee who stopped the action in the first round of their fight, which served on the FX-televised prelims of the event at Revel Atlantic City in Atlantic City, N.J.

Yet he thinks the fight could have gone longer.

"It was a little early (of a stoppage)," Nijem said. "I'm not the one that called it, but I really did have him in danger. I hit him with a good overhand right on the feet and then when we were on the ground, I had him mounted and was landing some big elbows.

"I just know that a lot of the refs, if they don't know you, they're going to stop it earlier than later. But if they know you're someone who can fight through things, like Frankie Edgar, the ref is going to let you fight through it more."

Of course, Nijem is happy to get the win, though he injured his right thumb early on the fight and may have to take more time off than the usual one week that's standard for his gym, The Pit Elevated, in Orem, Utah.

Yet he would also like it if his fights had fewer rules to perform by.

"They have all these little dumb rules, like a 12-to-6 elbow, for some reason, is not allowed," Nijem said. "But in the end, it's a fight.

"Everyone is talking about that soccer kick that put down (Roger) Huerta and, 'They need to outlaw soccer kicks.' Well, in all reality, you shouldn't be getting soccer-kicked. It's a fight. That's the bottom line. Are we going to make [MMA] a point-karate thing with all these little rules?"

Some rules are necessary, he clarified, like those against eye-gouging and groin attacks and fish-hooking. But despite the exciting work he's done so far, he believes things could be more exciting.

"I think it would make MMA more exciting if they ... changed the scoring system so whoever puts more damage on the other guy wins," Nijem said.

definition of stupid its in every fighters contract that they dont get their full purse if they dont make weight why should this guy be an exception? just because nijem doesnt care doesnt make it fair to other fighters that miss weight.

also why would he turn down money? hes essentially getting paid a little extra to fight a weightclass higher. he isnt that highly paid to begin with i feel he could use the money.
