| Chris Weidman: UFC pushing Anderson Silva for title fight, decision rests with Silva Chris Weidman: UFC pushing Anderson Silva for title fight, decision rests with 'The Spider' - MMAmania.com Quote:
Sometimes, a win just isn't enough.
Not for Chris Weidman, at least, who says that should he ever get a fight with Anderson Silva and get the win, but not a decisive finish, he wouldn't be satisfied. It's rather odd, really, because one would think if a fighter could be the one dethrone the longest reigning champion in Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) history -- and perhaps the greatest mixed martial artist (MMA) who ever lived -- no matter how he did it that it would be the biggest feather he could slip into his cap.
Apparently, "All American" has his goals set at a higher bar, saying that he isn't just content with "sharing a cage" or just "to see how he can do" with the "Spider," like most other opponents seem to be.
Perhaps Weidman is still riding high from his shellacking of top contender Mark Munoz back on July 11, 2012, at UFC on Fuel TV: "Munoz vs. Weidman" where the Serra-Longo-trained fighter absolutely steamrolled past "The Filipino Wrecking Machine" via technical knockout in the second round.
Or, he is simply that confident that he can do what no one has been able to do in eight years, and that's finish the Brazilian bomber.
Hear what Weidman had to say on the matter on today's (July 16, 2012) appearance on "The MMA Hour," after the jump: Quote: |
"Every single time I've had a full training camp, I've finished the fight. This is the first one that got out of the first round. I've beaten two top-five guys in a row. And I think I'm a stylistic nightmare for Anderson Silva. A lot of these guys, I see them go on record basically saying ‘I'd just love a shot at Anderson Silva to see how I'd do.' I'm not in here to just to able to share the cage with Anderson Silva. That's not my goal at all, I'd be far from content with that. I'm going in there to beat Anderson Silva. And to finish Anderson Silva. Im not just saying that out of the side of my mouth. I'm being completely truthful. If I get a fight with Anderson Silva, I am going in there to finish him, and if I were just to win against Anderson Silva, I wouldn't even be satisfied, I need to go in there and finish him. That's the truth. I might be out of my mind, but, I really believe that."
| Though UFC officials have yet to confirm whether or not Weidman will actually get the next title shot at 185 pounds, seeing as some seem to believe he doesn't deserve it yet, he did reveal that talks about a fight with ‘The Spider" have been mentioned with UFC matchmakers and apparently, the ball is in Silva's court: Quote: |
"My manager has talked to Joe Silva and all of them. And supposedly they actually really want me to fight Anderson. The question is, will Anderson fight me? I think that's what it's coming down to. When is Anderson going to be ready to fight again? That whole thing. You know, Anderson Silva's making so much money in Brazil right now, he's chilling. He's making so much money outside the ring, I don't know if he's so jumpy to jump in there with a guy who's young, hungry, who's a bad match-up for him on paper like me, and whose name is not (as lucrative as) a Chael Sonnen at this point."
| Silva is coming off a second round victory over bitter-rival Chael Sonnen at UFC 148, a fight where he suffered little to no visible damage. A fast turnaround for Silva is not that far-fetched; however, whether or not a fight against an up-and-comer like Weidman is interesting enough for him to cut his vacation time short, is a different story.
How about it Maniacs, are you feeling Weidman's confidence and attitude about a potential showdown with the best pound-for-pound fighter in the game today? Can Weidman do what 16 previous opponents such as the aforementioned Sonnen, Dan Henderson, Rich Franklin and Vitor Belfort have failed to do?

I believe that he is a backup at best at this point, if not plan c... Lombard is clearly what the UFC wants. If he loses to Tim, then it could potentially be anyone.
Tim, Wideman, or even Belcher.

Chris Weidman deserves the shot and has a great chance of beating Anderson

| I like this guy! Straight to the point and has his eye on the prize. Good work ethic sounds like too

Tim, Wideman, or even Belcher. | Lombard has no arguement for a title shot even if he beats Botesch (doubtful). The only guy that would have an arguement over Weidman would be Botesch if he wins and that is all.
Lombard's record is really neat to look at but when the toughest guy you have beaten in years is Trevor Prangley, sorry you aren't in title talks.
Like I said also, the timing makes too much sense to not have Silva v. Weidman. Both guys fought less then a week apart from each other and both came out unharmed with impressive victories over Top 5 MWs. They could do this fight in October and let the MW division clear itself out a little bit.

I would say give him Chael or Belcher. If he wins he gets Anderson.

Lombard is a former champion from another organization whom ZUFFa paid a lot of money for. They wil most Certainly give him a title shot if he wins his next fight.
