| Joe Lauzon is not going to let Jamie Varner make his name off him UFC Quick Quote: Joe Lauzon is not going to let Jamie Varner make his name off him like Edson Barboza - MMAmania.com Quote: Quote: |
"It is much easier for me to have better training partners to prepare for [Jamie Varner] than for Etim, who is long, rangy, and an awkward striker. It was hard to find guys to spar the same way as him, all herky jerky. But I have a bunch of guys at my gym who are 5'9, 5'10 and are good wrestlers and good boxers. Varner is a higher ranked guy, the former WEC champ and Barboza is a huge name to have a win over. Varner had a huge win where he stepped in on short notice. I don't want him to make another name off of me."
| - UFC lightweight Jamie Varner stepped in on short notice against Edson Barboza at UFC 146 and derailed the hype train in devastating fashion, handing the Brazilian his first loss via violent first round knockout. He once again stepped up to the plate, replacing an injured Terry Etim to take on Joe Lauzon this upcoming Saturday night (August 4, 2012) on the UFC on FOX 4 main card. His opponent, Joe Lauzon, understands the severity of his situation and he does not want to make the same mistakes Barboza did to Varner three months ago.

I say Varner takes it. He's definitely not someone who's easy to submit and he has better wrestling. I would also give Varner a slight edge on the feet and a cardio edge.

Varner has come a long way from being the whiny bitch of the WEC....
Not really.
I won't forget those interviews he gave in the past so easily!
WAR J-LAU despite the ridiculous nickname!

Joe by RNC. Should be a great battle, but I feel Varner slips up in a scramble and leaves Lauzon just enough room to land the choke.

I like JLau in this fight.
I feel alot of people have now jumped on the Varner bandwagon since he made them fall off their Barboza wagon & to me he hasn't done much to make me think he's a new fighter.
Wonder if alot of people be grabbing on Matt Browns ball sack next time he is about to fight.

Varner's skillset is extremely solid.

Varner's skillset is extremely solid. | Yeah I get that I was never knocking his skillset I am just not being to quick to assume we are going to see the Varner that fought Barboza in his next fights to come.
And even if we see that Jamie fight in and fight out is it going to be enough to hang with the top 5?
I just have a few questions about Varner right now and think this fight will answer them for me

| WARNING -THIS IS JUST AN OPINION. I AM NOT STATING A FACT (looking at you "Captonion") -WARNING
I think Varner's skillset is beyond solid. But in my opinion, it is his mental game that gets in the way sometimes. When he is confident, the guy is a force to be reckoned with. I wouldn't be surprised if he puts Joe to sleep in the first round.

Yeah H0ss, that was what I was getting at. Varner needed that fall from grace for him to understand what he has and can do.
