| *MMANews FORUMS Rankings - July 31, 2012 Top 15 for the first 7 divisions; Top 10 for flyweight and women's p4p Please note that the MMANews FORUMS rankings are separate from the MMANews website rankings. Committee members: Dr. MMA, Rivethead, KevoOnTheRadio, TBEAR, SWIFTboy Alternate members: Mac ( Mac will fill in as an alternate member if one of the members of the committee is unavailable.) Appointed to combine and matrix rankings from the committee members: CatSmasher* *CatSmasher is also responsible for breaking any ties. The following criteria were taken into account while generating the rankings:
A) Rankings are not based on opinion of fighter's skillset and potential but are based on evidence, i.e. fighter's opposition, track record, how dominant the wins were (dependent on opposition), and how dominant the losses were (dependent on opposition).
B) Recent victories hold more weight than historical, however, it doesn't negate it.
C) A fighter is ranked in the division where they have had their two most recent consecutive fights. This could be two actual fights or one actual fight and a scheduled/planned fight. For example, Demian Maia and Nate Marquardt are both WWs now since they have had one actual WW fight and plans are to continue in the division (one of which he made weight for and did not fight due to unforeseen circumstances).
D) If a fighter hasn't fought in 18 months or hasn't won a fight in 24 months, he will be removed from the top 10. For example, Shane Carwin was removed from the top 10 as he has not won a fight in 24 months. The highest he could be is #11.
E) If Fighter A wins a recent head-to-head matchup against Fighter B, it does not necessarily mean Fighter A moves ahead of fighter B. Head-to-head matchups are primarily considered when rankings are tied, similar to other sports like hockey or soccer.
e.g. If half of us thought that Overeem was #3 and the other half thought Werdum was #3, then we look to their actual fight. Overeem won, so he moves up and Werdum moves down.
F) With regards to the holy trinities (e.g. Machida beat Rashad who beat Rampage who beat Machida), we evaluate the individual's rank and their opposition's at the time of the fight. More recent victories are weighed heavier as are more dominating victories.
e.g. #4 ranked Machida defeated #1 ranked Rashad in May 2009, #3 ranked Rashad beat #4 ranked Rampage in May 2010, and #4 ranked Rampage beat #2 ranked Machida in Nov 2010. However, the dominance of their victories varied greatly. These factors was taken into consideration.

Belfort has exactly as many wins over top 10 MWs as I do. None. Tim has two. Belfort isn't undefeated at MW, Tim is. Belfort got absolutely STORCHED against Anderson already.
Tim is getting raped here.
What looks better? The Patriots blowing out Miami by 45 points or The Patriots beating the Giants in the Playoffs by 3?

The upper-middle section of the MW rankings was actually the most contentious area, I beleive. So good job pinpointing that area for discussion.
All I can say on MY behalf is that Vitor is very tough to rank. I thought of dropping him a few spots due to inactivity but decided to hold off on that for now. I think everyone agreed that minimally, he is VERY softly ranked and a loss in his next fight would drop him dramatically.
I know the Boetsch-Lombard fight has been discussed in depth in other threads. There were alot of considerations in that fight (slow paced, broken foot, debatable decision, etc). Tim was rewarded a top 5 rankings for back-to-back wins against top opponents, but you also have to admit the nature of his wins leave alot of room for subjectivity. Unless you think 'a win is a win' which I don't think anyone really does.
At the end of the day, I wouldn't argue with someone who had Tim above Vitor.
At the beginning of the day, I have no idea what getting STORCHED means. Is it a combination of starched and torched?

Very softly ranked?
If any fighter is VERY SOFTLY RANKED then they DO NOT deserve there ranking. There is no way in freakin' hell that you can say of he's absolutely softly ranked and then rank him that high.
Vitor gets where he is on name value alone and that is bullshit.
