What a horrible article. It is a fight I would love to see, but I dont see how you can logically not see how different those 2 fights are.

I guess anybody can become an MMA journalist now days...

GSP has alluded to it, but here it is coming from Anderson Silva himself.
Quote:
“I apologize,” Silva said. “I worked hard in training to go four or five rounds. I dropped from 230 pounds to 205 and then to 185. I worked my butt off. I had a long camp preparing for the fight. I owe you guys in the media, the fans and everyone an apology. I was prepared, but it’s unfortunate what happened.”
Silva's actions unbefitting his stature - UFC - Yahoo! Sports

Also, Ed Soares reinforces the weight when he states that Anderson is walking around at 225 in this video at around 7:00. The GSP vs AS talk comes in around 5:30 where he says AS is too big for him.

I think Silva's size advantage at 168 was as big as Jones' is at 205 in terms of monstrous height and reach advantages against anyone they fought. At 205, Silva is average length, but has a small frame. He's pretty good at bulking up, but it's not optimal. Jones on the other hand, if he can bulk up he could easily be a big HW, bigger than JDS or Velasquez.

But, I don't think Shogun, Machida, Evans, or Hendo are any bigger than Silva. Silva just has a frame that makes fighting at 185 easy, and most of those guys would probably be a lot more successful if they started their careers at 185(of course Hendo did, but he's not very good at cutting weight anymore).
I disagree with your first sentence as I personally believe "fighting weight" is actually what is deceptive, not the "walk around weight." We all know that some fighters can shed water weight better than others, Anderson Silva and Forrest Griffin being prime examples of this. Both of them walk around at about 230lbs, FG has a 1 inch height advantage, and AS has a half inch reach advantage, making them virtually the same size. Taking that into consideration, I highly doubt FG would be able to make MW, while AS can do it easily due to a number of factors (such as individual physiology and experience in cutting weight).
Other than that, you make some good points and I agree with the rest of your post.

P.S. I just want to emphasize that I'm not trying to make this into some kind of "walk around weight" debate, but I just think it's important to note that some of these guys are a lot closer in size despite fighting in different weight classes.

230 lbs out of camp

200-205 after camp pre-cut

185 after weight cut

Has been stated many, many times over the years. His body type allows him to make the weight cut easier than most and he has mastered it over the years. You can tell from his muscle tone in the latter fights of Anderson's career.

Many of the top 10 in the LHW division could drop down and be Anderson's size in the MW division, though not necessarily with the reach advantage that Silva has. Jones just happens to have a freakish reach at LHW which somewhat dwarfs Silva's.

The reason why this fight won't take place is because Zuffa believes that a win for either of them in this bout will significantly lower their star power. Which is how it is like Mayweather/Pacquiao to me. They were both afraid of losing as they are currently the top stars in their sport that haven't fought. Yes, I believe Jones will be at that point if he annihilates Hendo.

The direction that would be the most fruitful for Zuffa would be to give Anderson two superfights. One with GSP and one with Jones. Anderson has already broke records and fought past where he said would retire (at 35). This would be the action that would be best for the fans and would result in two huge cards that will sell past a million - Over 60 million US for the UFC for each card.

MMANEWS logic...

Jon Jones should fight Anderson

Anderson Should not fight GSP.

Anderson is a coward for not wanting to fight Jones

GSP should not have to fight Anderson.

Jones should want to fight/challenge Silva

Anderson is a coward for calling out GSP.

Not really. I want Anderson to fight both GSP and Jones. It is something that I think could define MMA for many new fans. Were Hendo to have been sucessful at both endeavors he would not be the first to win such amazing superfights like Hendo/Anderson and Hendo/Rampage. Had Henderson won both or one of the fights, he would already be the GOAT of present.

I think that Anderson does not want to keep fighting much longer and wants to retire as the King of the Middleweight division. This is not something that could and would be best for Zuffa or for the UFC's fans.

I've already addressed this in my last post.

I have no problem with AS fighting GSP or JBJ, since I would love to see JBJ vs JDS (so many abbreviations). But as we already know, the UFC will likely not let those fights happen for the reason you've already listed.
