| Erick Silva: “Don’t be surprised if I take Jon Fitch down" Erick Silva: “Don’t be surprised if I take Jon Fitch down" Quote: It will be your third fight in Rio. Now you are fighting Jon Fight, a former number two of the division. How do you face this opportunity?
Well, first of all I’m glad to have this chance. It shows that UFC is giving me a chance to get bigger in the event. Now I have to embrace this chance and really go for it. I really rely on my coaches, like Josuel Distak and Rogerio Camoes, besides my training partners. We’re setting a good game plan so that I get the win on this fight. It’s two months from now. In which stage of the trainings are you at?
Actually, in terms of physical training I’m on the work-out part, the strength part. We’re really working on my strength. I wanna get there really strong and after this phase we’re going to focus on my cardio so I get a good resistance and better cardio than on my previous fights. Josuel Distak handles the MMA trainings and we’re training specifically for this fight: I’m training to stay on my feet, to prevent the takedowns. I’m waiting for the Wrestling coach to arrive, Eric Albarracin – Team Nogueira’s coach. I’ll train Wrestling too. I guess I have a complete training along with my teammates Rafael Feijao, Ronaldo Jacare and Rogerio Minotouro. We trade information and I guess their experience will help me a lot on this. How will you be able to stop Jon Fitch’s takedowns and impose your style?
Actually, Rafael Feijao and Ronaldo Jacare are guys who fight well against wrestlers and, well, I I’ve been training with them. We have a good game to block wrestlers and it’s been working. Minotouro Nogueira is bringing wrestlers from the United States to train with us and also be sparring too. Every time I train with them I feel it’s easier to defend the takedowns because I’m doing the right defense, on the fence. It’s been working out. Another thing is that wrestlers don’t expect you to use Judo takedowns, so we’re investing on that too. Don’t be surprised if I take Jon Fitch down (laughs). We’re training it a lot. I’m taking many guys down on the trainings and I’m sure it’s a point Erick. In case you win, do you think you will get closer to a title shot?
Well, actually a win over Jon Fitch brings me closer to the belt. I’m sure that, right after this fight, after I beat him up. I’ll figure on the top of the division. Even knowing there’re people on the like I guess that after one, two more fights I really can fight for the title. It’s a consequence. I really don’t think about that now and I’m not in a hurry to fight for the belt because I wanna earn more experience. After this fight and another one and have more experience, I will have the confidence for, when I fight for the title, I will be sure I’ll leave the octagon with the belt on my waist. I’m getting prepared for that, so I’m not really worries about that now. Do you think you will be put under pressure since you will be fighting at home for the third time?
There’s always pressure. I try to handle it just fine. I can’t care about those stuff and think “oh, if I win I’ll get a title shot, I’ll be on this position on the ranking”. I only try to do my best on the trainings to fight Jon Fitch and win. I’m cool about that. out of the times I fought in Brazil, I was so well prepared I barely could hear the fans screaming. My focus and concentration are on my opponent. When I left the backstage, when I left the locker-room and went and walked out to the octagon I couldn’t think nor look to anybody else but my opponent. I guess it’s a positive thing. I’m very focused. I’m sure it won’t disturb me, quite the opposite. It will help me. The fans yelling and screaming will cheer me up and motivate even more. O St. Pierre is the champion for a long time and Carlos Condit is the interim champion and will fight GSP. Do you think Condit stands a chance? What comes next for them?
There are many people on the line before me. There’s Hendricks, Kampmann, there’s that young and talented kid Rory MacDonald, so maybe I’ll fight one of the top 4 athletes later. There’s Condit and Nick Diaz. I guess there are only tough guys on the top 6, maybe even seven there are contenders to the title. It’s one of the toughest divisions. If you stop to think about it, it’s one of the toughest divisions. I guess we have to do a good training and get there, be on a good position.

Yeah, but I would not want to play that game with Fitch on the ground, if you can sweep Fitch, then you are a bad Mo-fo fo sho sho. But if you can't.....Well.......life's just gonna suck for 15 minutes....

Not a bad idea at all. Often a good way of avoiding getting taken down, is to take your opponent down first.
He will have Fitch Guessing with his standup, and has some explosive quickness that he could use to catch Fitch off guard...
He could land a shot or quick throw on Fitch, but if it turns into a wrestling battle from the clinch, his chances of landing a TD decrease significantly.
