Hector Lombard was less than spectacular in his big league debut, and now we might know why. According to the former Bellator middleweight champion, he entered last month’s UFC 149 shootout against Tim Boetsch with significant wounds.

“I want to let all my fans know I fought [my] last fight injured,” Lombard wrote on his Facebook page. “i wasnt 100% sure but i [went] to the doctors… I have a fracture sternum with a torn cartilage, i got this injure in training for my fight with Tim Boetsch.

“I have to be out of training for 6weeks i should never have fought like that, but i didnt want to let my fans and the UFC down, love you all.”

Lombard’s post can be taken one of two ways; Fans will either show sympathy towards the 34-year-old, or they’ll bash the slugger for airing his excuses. In the fight business, it’s usually the latter of the two options.

“Lightning” had rattled off 24 consecutive victories en route to capturing Bellator’s 185-pound crown prior to his split decision loss to Boetsch. It was Lombard’s first blemish since dropping a unanimous decision to Gegard Mousasi in November of 2006.

Why fight at all with those kind of injuries to put on that display?

I would have had more respect for him, and perfectly understood if he had dropped outta his fight with a fractured sternum and torn cartilage.

I don't think many people would have the gall to criticize the man for pulling outta a fight with those injuries and 99% of people would have understood his injuries meant he couldn't fight.

I just find it a bit odd that Hector happens to have these major injuries upon his FIRST UFC fight against an elevated caliber of opponent, which ended his winstreak.

Sure, it explains his shitty performance, but there are a whole helluva lot of entangibles that could've also accounted for his poor showing.

Considering he didn't do jack shit I beleive him he should've pulled out even though the fans would be pissed by another drop out they probably wouldn't be as pissed as they were at his performance at UFC 149.

I agree with having more respect if he had pulled out of the fight. At least he was injured and could have made a better debut once he was healed. Now, after that showing, it sounds like an excuse injury or not.

i'm willing to take it as "i would have been more explosive if i wasn't injured" not "i would have won if i wasn't injured"

If Hector called Dana up and said something to the effect of, "Hey, I know the card has been destroyed by injuries, but I'm injured too and don't want to lay an egg in my UFC debut given all that we've both got riding on this...." I think Dana and company would've done some magic and allowed Hector to make a better, more appropriate debut when healthy.

Coming out after the fact is very "Tito-esque".

I got in a fight with dude once who picked me up above his head set me on his head and ran head first (really my body first) in to a building cracking my sternum. I was sure i was dying as i could not take a breath
