Muhammad Ali didn't pretend to be anything just to "make some fans". He wasn't butt hurt when opponents or fans hated him. He was cocky and proud of it.
Jon Jones, on the other hand, tries too hard to be a "good guy" even though he has a chip on his shoulder. When fans start to root against him, he goes on a tirade. If he is cocky, then that's fine but don't pretend just to [once again] "make some fans".
This has nothing to do with his talent. He is easily one of the most talented fighters in MMA.

This has nothing to do with his talent. He is easily one of the most talented fighters in MMA. | I always thought Jones had a very odd personality. But I dont get what he is pretending to be. He has good morals and is a generally nice person. but can come off as overly confident at times as well as bitchy if you cross him. That doesnt make him a bad person...
He always shows how important his faith is, yet when he acts cocky or makes a mistake... people call him fake. A very basic christian principal is that everyone makes mistakes and nobody is perfect, he said that as well.
But I do agree, that he looks to get the fans support. A lot of his attitude has come from the initial backlash he has gotten from fans. Ever since the shogun fight, he has been fighting big names with huge fan bases... rooting for him to lose. He doesnt respond well to that.
The first time I can remember seeing the current Jones that can come off the way he does, was when a fan said he was going to get his ass kicked by Shogun and he said "Really, Come on"
I dont think any fighter would respond well to a comment like that. Then he goes on to beatdown some of the best and it makes people dislike him even more.

He is easily one of the most talented fighters in MMA. | Getting into your monster truck and crashing into cars while being in a police chase or getting naked and going into a church wacked out of your mind, those are tirades. Making comments on twitter that only some think are douchey.... a tirade that is not.

Same thing applies to Anderson. If you only want "big" fights then drop the title. If you want to stay the champ then you fight whoever they put in front of you and don't bitch or fake injuries. It's that simple.

Just dont like the timing of this Machida rematch, too soon in my opinion. I would love Jones to fight a couple other guys instead.... thats IF he gets by Hendo first.

When jones gets in the octagon with henderson
He wont live through the fight.
its just my opinion on the matter. ive not heard someone who is a champ besides anderson , not want to fight someone they already beat decisively. beat him and collect another 3-400k paycheck. whats the big deal, OHHHHH, its 10k less then my last fight. i need that money to feed my kids. boohoo. jones makes more money in one fight than alot of people make in 10 years, whats he bitching about money for? sounds like a spoiled little rich bitch to me. he is looking past hendo and that will prove fatal to his title. and next saturday will prove that.
What? im a supposed to hang on jones' nutsack just because he is crushing everyone because he looks like sasquatch compared to everyone else lol? before we all say jones is the best thing since sliced bread, why dont he just go up to HW and pick on people his own size? sound good? probably not because he would lose to JDS, AO, Cain, Carwin and the other top HWs

I never thought I'd advocate for a professional athlete to get a publicist, but I think this kind of issue impacts mainstream perception of the entire sport, and makes it more difficult for people unaffiliated with it to take it seriously. I'd prefer for them to get some type of life-coach that will change their emotional attitudes rather than a PR person to just adjust their public speech, but I guess I'd settle. I certianly don't want this nonsense to continue.
I think it would be different if fighters had a solid alternative to a given opponent when they voiced disapproval. Instead of just saying "I don't want to fight opponent X," they could say "opponent Y is a much better fight than opponent X" and it wouldn't seem so wussified and antithetical to the heart of a champion--provided that the opponent they prefer is actually in the same weight class or above, and actually poses a legitimate amount of threat--at least as much as the opponent they don't want to face. But it's pretty common in today's marketing. Kos, sonnen and lesnar and rampage have all done the same thing in trying to play both sides of the hype fence. Quote:

The term has more to do with negative speech than with any direct action.
