Frankie Edgar is headed to the featherweight division.
After much discussion and speculation, the former UFC lightweight champion has decided to move down to 145 pounds and is hoping to make his debut by the end of the year. The news was first reported on Tuesday night's episode of UFC Tonight on FUEL TV.
Edgar (14-3-1) is coming off a controversial loss to Benson Henderson at UFC 150 earlier this month. The loss marked his second in a row to Henderson. Following his UFC 144 loss to "Bendo" in February, UFC president Dana White said he would like to see Edgar move down to 145 pounds, but Edgar was successful in convincing White to give him one more crack at the lightweight title.
Edgar said he'll fight any featherweight the UFC matches him up against first. White said at the UFC 150 post-fight press conference that Edgar would most likely have to win at least once as a featherweight in order to receive a title shot, so he's not expecting a title shot right off the bat. Jose Aldo, the UFC featherweight champion, defends his title next against Erik Koch at UFC 153 on Oct. 13.
"He said he wants to drop to the featherweight so I’m hoping he does that to end this story," Aldo said. "He’s welcome here so that we shut him off and he goes to the lightweight or bantamweight classes."

I hope Frankie has lots of success at 145. So many good fights for Frankie at 145.

I'm not so sure about this...one of Frankie's major advantages was his speed and now that hes dropping to a division where everyone is faster....I just dont know, but I am excited at all of the potential fights

I think this move extends Frankie's career--let's face it, there's a reason why everybody else is cutting weight.
Edgar vs Korean Zombie needs to happen.

I wish he didn't go down to 145. Seeing as I think he won his last fight to me he is still considered the best LW in the world.

Hominick! That would be a saweet fight! I know...Hominick is 3 fight loss streak however that fight would be sweet. I think Mendes would be a good fight at FW for him as well but Hominick would be sick!

I think he will actuallybe worse at this weight bc his speed won't be as much of an advantage as it was at lightweight.
That being said the featherweight division is also significantly weaker than the lightweight division so I still think he will do well.

That's disappointing I was hoping for a rematch with Gray to break their tie.

Also with you on a matchup against Money, there are so many potential great fights for him at FW, should be interesting to see. I dont think he'll have too many issues and his weight is already relatively close walking around so you dont have to worry too horribly about him having a bad cut. Never an automatic, but I think Frankie adjusts and fits right in. Quote:

That being said the featherweight division is also significantly weaker than the lightweight division so I still think he will do well. | With Frankie's wrestling, footwork, striking, and speed I think he will stay on pace right off the gate with the FW's. He's not going to get any slower dropping 10 pounds to fight and I'm sure he'll stay just as quick on the feet, but if we are comparing his speed and striking to say, Jose Aldo, well then thats another chapter entirely.
He wont be on Aldo's level right away, but I dont think he would do as horrible and be as easy a victory as Aldo suggested. Certainly wont send him packing out of the division....
