Unfortunately, the business side of things has impacted title shots tremendously. Interim champs could do a lot, but most often, they don't.
Condit could have done a lot to really bring his interim status from a place-holder for GSP into something special, but he chose to wait. If he beats Georges in November, fanboys are going to immediately attribute it to the long layoff St. Pierre had, and demand a rematch. On the other hand, if Condit had taken the opportunity to beat up some other contenders while Georges heals, he'd have momentum and more credit going into the bout.
But all in all, it was a smart, responsible business decision, much like smart, responsible fighters would make. It's just that the general public wants to respect fighters for being fighters, not for being smart and responsible. Condit could also have fought, and lost, and thus losing his chance. Nogs could tell him a thing or two about that.
All manner of men came to work for the News: everything from wild young Turks who wanted to rip the world in half and start all over again -- to tired, beer-bellied old hacks who wanted nothing more than to live out their days in peace before a bunch of lunatics ripped the world in half.
