On a lower note, actually, it does make me question Jon's true motives a bit. Given all the circumstances, I can't tell if he's innocent or cunning. The fighters themselves are below the reason why this situation bothers me though.

That isn't venting. That is pouting over spilt milk. Suck it up guys. I never heard ONE PERSON SAY ANY of these things when Vitor fought Bones. NOT ONE.
To be fair, by the time the Bones/Vitor fight was made, those of us who were in disapproval of the first time Jones/Chael nearly came to had just given up due to all of the headache, and then to the announcement of Bones/Vitor. It was a product of poor decisions and we did suck it up because we have no choice but to watch or not watch... I know I posted about how I disagreed with it but just took the good from the bad, hoping it wouldn't become something occasional.

This is also different in the sense that it isn't a last minute fight, but a TUF season.

It can bother some people who like to know what it is exactly that they're watching. When they promote it as a legit sport that will be worldwide someday and then do something like this, it messes with peoples minds. Some people don't like that when it comes to something they value.

This all makes me see the UFC in another light really. Not MMA, not the fighters, but the UFC. Makes sense of things people have said on here in the past. I guess it is just sort of depressing to accept. I hope it gets to where it deserves to be some day. The UFC has the power to take it down two roads. This fight and TUF season are not on the one I would like to see it go down.

But hey, I'm just one fan.

However, since no other lhWs have come out to voice their disapproval of Sonnen getting a title shot, there might be something else going on that we don't know about.
On your first point, I'm reserving the right to cherry pick the quote that best serves the smart-ass point I'm trying to make, while ignoring anything else.

On your second point, give it a day or two

Seriously, go back and read the threads. It was repeatedly said that while folks could live with Vitor getting the shot, if Sonnen gets it quickly it'll be inexcusable. RH, for example, was a frequent commenter to this effect and a lot of us echoed agreement. (Not trying to call you out RH, figure you'll be happy to point this out as well.)

Not sure anyone should be surprised by this thread at all. It's exactly the same comments as before, just replace "if Sonnen gets the shot" with "Sonnen got the shot."

Pretty much this.

Also, for the people that are downplaying everything and saying that people are taking it too seriously. Isn't thisbexactly what passionate fans should be doing? Shouldn't passionate fans be acting passionately about the sport they love? Like Yankeey fans if they loose the World Series or raiders fans that deck their whole houses in raiders paraphernalia. This is the Internet, a place where you can vent your thoughts as passionately as you want to, it's not as though we are like this in real life.

Generally speaking, I'm not a very big fan of Kevin Iole. However, he just wrote a decent article that sums up my feelings nicely, going to post a snippet. I don't find all his points accurate, just the overall message.

Quote:
One of the things that White and UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta did in taking control of the company in 2001 was to try to structure the titles in a way that they meant something.

There has been a path to a championship that is transparent and understandable. No one was given title shots just because of their name or who their manager happened to be, as has been the case far too long in boxing.

By adhering to that rule as strictly as possible, White and Fertitta gave the UFC title belts meaning. Not many boxing fans care much for the WBO, the WBA, the IBF or the WBC. Very few can name all of their champions or their top contenders.

In the UFC, with some exceptions, it's clear. One must win his way to a title
shot.

Sonnen, though, is getting a title shot simply because he's outspoken and because there is no better self-promoter in the sport.

He didn't earn this shot. He was given it. And that demeans the belt.

It will, though, make Jones, Sonnen and the UFC a lot of money and figures to immeasurably help the ratings on TUF. The reality series created by White and Fertitta, and that helped turn the UFC into a multibillion dollar business, has been listing recently.

Ratings are down and interest seems to be waning.

White, though, insisted he was not asked by Fox officials to put Jones and Sonnen on the show and that it wasn't done as a means to boost ratings. He said the show is doing what it is supposed to do.

"That's what the word is, that TUF needs the help?" White asked in response to a question whether the decision was driven by a desire to give the show a boost. "People love to speculate and talk [expletive], but the truth of it is, they don't know what the [expletive] they're talking about. I have all the answers. The Internet does not. We built this company and we know what we're doing. That had nothing to do with it."

White also said having Jones and Sonnen coach on "The Ultimate Fighter," did nothing to interfere in a potential Jones-Silva superfight. He said Jones-Silva "was never going to happen that soon," and said Silva will face St-Pierre long before he fights Jones.

Thus, White was able to put Jones and Sonnen on TUF, where the exposure on FX each week will undoubtedly make the pay-per-view bigger.

It's hard to argue with the business logic of the decision, but from a purely sporting angle, it sucks.

A guy who did nothing to qualify for a title shot is getting one for no reason other than that he's quick with a quip.

The UFC bills itself "as real as it gets," but this time, it's nothing but a fairy tale.
Jones-Sonnen may be a financial windfall, but it denigrates the UFC light heavyweight belt - Yahoo! Sports

I love Sonnen and I think it will make for a great TUF season, but in no way should Chael get a title shot (him stepping up for 151 was different). I'll be rooting for Chael though.

Pretty much exactly how I feel about it.

Lets be honest too, its going to be sonnen vs greg jackson. Its not like jones thinks for himself, and he's not going to be the one coaching.

As for Sonnen deserving the title shot, he doesnt. At least jones is defending the title though, and not chasing vanity fights instead.

You all seem to forget that Chael is willing to fight anyone. I am sure hed fight overeem if asked. No one has the heart he does. Especially bones. For a guy with that last name he sure lacks a spine
