Cormier: Fight with Jon Jones is inevitable, 'DC' could make 205 pounds in six months

Is a fight between Strikeforce heavyweight Daniel Cormier and UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones a realistic possibility in the relatively near future? Cormier thinks so, and he's talking all about the potential match up with 'Bones.'
Quote:

Cormier appeared on Spike TV's "MMA Uncensored Live," where he was in the mood to talk about future opponents, but not necessarily future opponents of his own.

Before he could get into his own personal affairs, Cormier offered his opinion on Ultimate Fighting Championship's (UFC) decision to award Chael Sonnen a title shot versus light heavyweight champion Jon Jones.

Does Sonnen deserve the opportunity? Not as far as Cormier is concerned:

Quote:

"Not based on merit. Popularity and everything else? Maybe. The fans, they ask for things, in the moment. Then, when it happens, they complain about it. You gotta be careful what you ask for. When they said, 'We want him to fight Chael Sonnen.' Then, when the fight came to fruition, they kinda questioned it. I don't think he deserves a title shot. He hasn't won a fight in that division. And, I don't think that's even the case. It's him losing his last fight that's the problem. I truly believe that Dan Henderson should be fighting for the belt. Overeem had a big break, and he's still getting his title shot. Dan Henderson just took a big break, due to injury. I think he should still be getting his title shot."
Cormier and Jones have been linked to each other recently in the press, specifically after Jones shot down rumors of him coaching opposite the former Olympian, due to his "relatively unknown" status.

Apparently, the two fighters came into contact with each other recently. According to Cormier, "Bones" let him know that a fight between the two of them has been on his mind:

Quote:

"At the Chael Sonnen fight, he walked up and got to his seat, and he asked me, 'Hey, are you going to 205?' I said, 'Yeah, we're gonna have to fight.' He goes, 'Good, cuz I'm ready for you.' So, obviously, this is a fight that he actually thinks about. But, I guess it just doesn't work for him, right now."
Though he currently resides at 265 pounds, the relative newcomer to sport of MMA believes that he will eventually make the move down to light heavyweight, and when he does, he sees a fight versus Jones as a foregone conclusion:

Quote:

"I do. I think eventually, it's bound to happen. Obviously, this guy mentions me and talks about how I don't have enough followers on Twitter to coach The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) with him. So, you guys, get on Twitter and follow 'DC.' But, yeah, I think it'll happen eventually. It's a fight that people want to say, and I think it'll definitely happen.

Realistically, it would take some time. I think, six months. Because I would have to adjust my lifestyle. I'd be dieting and continuing my training. I would have to be real focused and real serious to do it."

I think that's the smart move after he fulfills whatever contractual obligations he has with Strikeforce.

He should have got the opportunity if not Dan, chael has no place in this whole fiasco.

Who are the LHW's left in SF?

If he changes weight classes now, would he be relieved of his SF contract as he'd no longer be the HW champ?

I understand the need to speak up and self-promote, but the notion that Cormier will fight Jon Jones at 205 lbs seems far off.

Showtime must be pissed at Zuffa right now. And I'm sure that Daniel is on Showtime's short list of fighters not allowed to fight in the UFC while they broadcast MMA.

How the hell is Cormier gonna maintain his status as top tier heavyweight and gradually work himself down to a weight that almost killed him in the past.

I know Daniel trains with Cain and doesn't want that fight, but I just don't see the hypothetical Bones vs Cormier fight happening and getting tired of hearing about it.

Velasquez: Cormier wants Jones, and he'd win - Mixed Martial Arts Blog - ESPN
Quote:

"He'd beat him," Velasquez told MMA Fighting. "He's fast. He's powerful. He has the best wrestling out there. I think he beats him wherever they're at."

Confirming Cormier's desire to fight at 205lbs, Velasquez confessed the one problem would be the diet, which currently is not listed as one of Cormier's strengths.

"I think he wants to drop down [to light-heavyweight]. He's been wanting that fight with Jon Jones for a while now. We've definitely talked about it.

"He's heavy right now. He's like 240lbs. But we'll clean up his diet really good, because the way his diet is, it isn't the cleanest. He's going to have to work a little bit at it, for sure.

"He just has to do it smart. The diet needs to be on-point. He can't be messing around with that kind of stuff. I think he can do it."

I have a feeling by the time Cormier can make 205, Jones will be growing and too big to make the cut to 205. I'd rather see this fight and many other fights happen for both Jones and Cormier at HW.

Mousasi is the only relevant LHW I can think of.
There is Feijao too but he is suspended.

Cormier v mousasi would be an excellent fight for Cormier and would give him a taste of solid LHW competition before taking on one of the best.
