GSP: Frankie Edgar is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the UFC

Georges St. Pierre: Frankie Edgar is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the UFC - MMAmania.com

Quote:

This one is bound to raise a few eyebrows.

In the age-old argument as to who is the best pound-for-pound fighter in mixed martial arts (MMA), the usual suspects in the form of current Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) title holders Jon Jones, Georges St. Pierre and Anderson Silva are always at the top of the list.

According to current welterweight kingpin, Georges St. Pierre, his list looks drastically different. In fact he's not even in the top three and Anderson Silva, a man who hasn't lost in nearly six years and has shattered just about every UFC record there is, sits at number three.

So who, according to Rush, is the best pound-for pound fighter in the UFC?

None other than former 155-pound champion, Frankie Edgar.

His puzzling answer to Los Angeles Times:

Quote:

While you were gone, the landscape has changed. Jon Jones is dominating at light-heavyweight. Anderson convincingly beat Chael Sonnen. If you had to rank the top three fighters in the UFC now in order, who are they?

"No. 1 is Frankie Edgar; he's the best pound-for-pound fighter we have."

Wait, he's not even a champion.

"He lost his fight to Benson Henderson only according to the judges. He was much stronger than Henderson."

OK, who else is in the top three?

"Jon Jones is No. 2, Anderson Silva's No. 3."

You're out?

"I haven't fought in a long time. I'm out of it. After Carlos Condit, maybe I'll be back."
Before you all get riled up and slam "Rush" for his opinion, we must remember that pound-for-pound rankings are just that, opinions.

Granted, "The Answer" has proven to be one of the most skilled MMA fighters in the world and is undoubtedly a gifted fighter, but, the fact remains, he is currently on a two fight skid, to the same man no less (Ben Henderson), and isn't even the champion in his own division.

St. Pierre has always been rather modest when it comes to praising himself, so leaving himself off the list is not too surprising, though he definitely belongs in the top three.

I saw this and thought it was pretty interesting.

I almost feel like this is a jab back at Anderson Silva for his recent comments about GSP.

I don't agree with it, but I wouldn't say it's an absurd assertion.

Of all fighters mentioned, Edgar fights opponents bigger than him and relies on pure talent unlike the other 3 who have some advantages fighting smaller opponents.

I think he says this in retaliation to Anderson's "GSP is the easier fight" comment. Maybe this talk will escalate and a super fight will be in the works.

I love how the article writer questions GSP's judgement, like what credentials do you have to make comments like this you dumbfuck?

Ive heard GSP say Frankie was one of the p4p best before and its not in retaliation to anything Anderson says, GSP is just an honest dude that knows more about this sport than pretty much everyone on the planet.

I like his list, Jones has fought much tougher competition than Anderson has and how can you be p4p best when you got dominated in 4.5 rounds vs Sonnen?

PSST... GSP's own rankings have Jones ahead of himself so hes agreeing with what Anderson has said. Bravo.

How can you be a P4P champ when you get KTFO by an unranked opponent?

Why would we be puzzled? He gave us an honest answer.

Get all riled up? It is like he said all red headed people with freckles hate red headed people without freckles (it is true). There I go being offensive. Who cares fuck you day walkers.

So I do disagree with Gsp's list, but it is his list, and I can see an arguement for it.

I like his reasoning for leaving himself off. He hasn't fought for ever. I really hope we see GSP 3.5 the post safe era. I want to see him and condit in an absolute war.

So help me if I have to start an apology thread to that daywalker ginger ninja. :)

I know you are playing devil's advocate, but Anderson got dominated for a long time in that fight (maybe ribs, maybe bad matchup, maybe tdd), but Serra caught lighting in a bottle.

4 oz gloves and anything can happen.

Not disagreeing with you ct, just saying.

He's easily one of the most exciting fighters out there and as far as I'm concerned, he's the rightful champ. I have to agree with Mr. St-Pierre on this one.
