| White: 'No idea' if UFC 154's Hendricks-Kampmann winner up next for title White: 'No idea' if UFC 154's Hendricks-Kampmann winner up next for title | MMAjunkie.com Quote:
That upcoming No. 1 contender's bout may not be one after all.
Today, UFC President Dana White said he's not sure if UFC 154's co-headliner between Johny Hendricks (13-1 MMA, 8-1 UFC) and Martin Kampmann (20-5 MMA, 11-4 UFC) will earn the winner a welterweight title shot, as the organization previously announced.
That's because UFC 154's headliner, welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, could temporarily leave the division for a blockbuster matchup.
As MMAjunkie.com (UFC blog for UFC news, UFC rumors, fighter interviews and event previews/recaps | MMAjunkie.com) reported earlier today, White seems content to move forward on a St-Pierre (22-2 MMA, 16-2 UFC) vs. Anderson Silva (33-4 MMA, 16-0 UFC) super fight if GSP defends his title at UFC 154, which takes place Nov. 17 at Montreal's Bell Centre. St-Pierre meets Carlos Condit (28-5 MMA, 5-1 UFC) in the pay-per-view headliner.
With the uncertainty of those plans, White isn't sure if Hendricks-Kampmann is a true No. 1 contender's bout. Quote:
"I have no idea," he said. "I have no idea. We have to see how this thing plays out.
"Like I tell everybody, people are asking me, 'Is the Anderson Silva fight happening next?' Well, [St-Pierre] needs to beat Carlos Condit first. And like I said earlier, people are overlooking Carlos Condit, and that's a bad idea."
| However, if victorious, don't expect Condit to take St-Pierre's spot in the super fight, which White said likely would headline a major stadium show. He said St-Pierre vs. Silva makes sense because both fighters have been ranked among the sport's top pound-for-pound fighters for so long.
White said even with a win over St-Pierre, Condit wouldn't be on that same level. And that could be a good thing for Hendricks and Kampmann, who, barring an immediate rematch between Condit and St-Pierre, could be up next for a shot at Condit's belt. Quote: |
"Carlos Condit ... will defend the title against who's next (if he beats St-Pierre)," White said.
| It's not just not clear if "next" is Hendricks or Kampmann.
| Wasn't this billed as a #1 contenders fight and has been the entire build up of the PPV?

If GSP loses I'd still want Kampmann/Hendricks to get the shot. I'm becoming grumpy about immediate rematches though.

^^ I remember it as a #1 contender fight too. I think Hendricks and Kampman may be getting screwed here just like Weidman and potentially Boetsch.

All good points, but remember, Nick Diaz will be back in the mix before any of these guys are ready to fight again. They are probably trying to set up GSP vs Silva, and Hitman/Big Rigg vs Diaz for the #1 spot.

If GSP stays at WW for his next fight Its deffenitly a #1 contender fight, I mean who else would deserve....nevermind lol.
If Nick Diaz or the Rory/Bj winner were to jump over either Kampmann or Hendricks that would be travesty. Hendricks has two solid top 5 wins back to back. And Kampmann arguabley has two top 10 wins back to back. And either winner can chaulk another top 5 win to their list.
No other WWs currently have these streaks going for them. Its an absolute #1 contender shot, I cant see how it wouldnt be.
Unless GSP fights Anderson next...but then either guy could wait for GSP much like Kenny Florian did with Bj Penn when he moved up to fight GSP. It was something like 8-9 months after.
