Daniel Cormier Slated For January Return, Dion Staring Named As Opponent

MMAjunkie.com is reporting that Daniel Cormier will be part of the January Strikeforce event. The Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix champion will face Dion Staring on the card, which is slated to feature three championship matches.
Cormier (10-0) was originally set to square off with former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir this month, but after Mir was forced out, no suitable replacement was ever made. The entire event was eventually scrapped by the promotion.

Staring (28-7) is a training partner of Alistair Overeem and has won each of his last six fights. Fourteen of his career wins have come by way of knockout, while another eight are submission victories.

For Cormier, this will likely be his final appearance for Strikeforce before heading to the UFC.

W.Silva>C.Norris 11-08-2012 04:49 PM

Who the fuck?

He is a dutch with a 28-7 record (At least he is experienced).
His most notable fight is a loss to little Nog in 2009

Another complete mismatch by Zuffa

For me, I see two predominant reasons why this matchup has been made.

1. To protect the major investment in Daniel Cormier before he makes his UFC debut, where he will be regarded as an immediate title contender and on a juggernaut streak. Why risk him losing on a lesser card on a smaller organization, when there's big money to be made?

2. A fuck you statement from ZUFFA to Showtime for cancelling both the September and November cards by not lending out a solid HW contender(ala Mir) this time around.

Fabricio Werdum surprised by 'TUF: Brazil' slot after offer to save Strikeforce event | MMAjunkie.com

Quote:

UFC heavyweight Fabricio Werdum today told MMAjunkie.com (UFC blog for UFC news, UFC rumors, fighter interviews and event previews/recaps | MMAjunkie.com) that he volunteered to fight Daniel Cormier at a Nov. 3 Strikeforce event, but the promotion's parent company never offered the matchup.

A subsequent opportunity to coach "The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil 2" opposite Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira came as a surprise.

"I didn't think I was as known in Brazil as Nogueira and (Mauricio) 'Shogun' (Rua) and Lyoto (Machida), so I really didn't believe that it was going to happen," Werdum said via translator. "But my coach reached out to (UFC matchmaker) Joe Silva asking about my next fight, and Joe did say it was a possibility.

Yeah, lame. Dana must want him coming into the UFC on a win. Gotta keep the hype train rolling

I don't know if you meant it like that, but do you think Cormier is all hype.

I would say keep the train rolling, b/c DC is legit. He man handled barnett, ko'd bigfoot, and has dominated everyone to step in the ring with him.

Yeah this looks like a gimmee but dc is as legit as they come.

Not going to argue with you there. There is a lot of hype behind Cormier though. I would have just liked to have seen how he help up against a legit top ten opponent. I just don't really see this fight being all that competitive. Seems to me that Dana didn't want to risk having someone so marketable come into the UFC on a loss so they give him an easy fight.
