Dana White angered by officiating job in Cote-Sakara, targets rematch - MMA Fighting

Quote:
MONTREAL -- UFC president Dana White voiced frustration at the officiating job done in the UFC 154 matchup between Patrick Cote and Alessio Sakara which ended in a disqualification loss for Sakara for illegal strikes to the back of the head.

White's anger stemmed from referee Dan Miragliotta's failure to call a timeout at any moment during a sequence of blows that landed in the forbidden area. If Miragliotta had stopped it earlier, Cote may have had a chance to recover, offering the fight a chance to continue. Instead, he was badly hurt by the strikes and the fight was waved off before the disqualification ruling was made.

Quote:
"Way late," he said of Miragliotta's stoppage. "I haven't heard anything about [Cote] that he's not OK but that was a horrible job. I counted between seven and nine illegal punches to the back of the head. It was crazy. He was just standing there watching it. Didn't jump in, didn't do anything. And I'm pretty sure, I think it should’ve been no contest, not awarded to Cote, but a no contest. But, horrible, really bad."
The fight lasted just 86 seconds.

White said he would like to put a rematch together when possible. Cote appeared OK afterward, coming back out to the arena floor later on to watch some of the main card bouts.

The ruling on the no contest is likely to be appealed by Sakara's camp, but Quebec's commission rules do state that a referee can "warn a competitor, penalize by points or disqualify without prior notice" depending on the foul committed.

Miragliotta reportedly re-watched the video at cageside before offering his final decision.

Quote:
"I do respect that," White said. "I do like the fact that they pulled the trigger and made a decision one way or the other. Don't take me wrong, I'm not knocking them for what they did. I'm just saying that normally that would be a no contest. But I like commissions that get in there and pull the trigger, because that was a horrible, horrible job by the ref. It's mind-boggling how you sit there and watch that many punches go to the back of someone’s head. It's crazy."

Wish Dan would have jumped in between the first or second one. Would have been nice to see a point taken and the fight continue, but such is the heat of battle. Was surprised that Sakara recovered and took it to Cote. Hope they make a rematch.

I didn't think it was that bad he was still trying for the legs up until the third last one. There was only two extra shots after he went out.

Unified Rules

I didn't count 7 - 9 illegal shots, I think I counted 5. It wasn't like Cote was moving his head a whole lot, so I'm not inclined to think they were accidental; just wreckless.

I think the DQ was probably the right call.

*Edit to add: It was bad officiating though, Dan let way too many of those shots land, and then forced himself to assess Sakara's intent, and pick an outcome.

Mriagliotta should not be allowed to ref again. This isn't the first time he's done something stupid and this time he but Cote's career and well being in jeopardy. All it takes is one shot to the base of the skull to seriously injure or kill a person.

I can't remember which fight it was last night, but Miragliotta was the ref in it too. One fighter got his mouthpiece knocked out and Dan was like, OK TIME OUT! Here let me get the mouthpiece for you, okay.. Lets continue!!!
I was like WTF??? If you lose your mouthpiece you don't get to call a timeout, Keep fighting asswhipe

Yes, the ref was horrible, but also horrible was the fighter. Sakara could also see he was hitting Cote in the back of the head and they want to let him fight again?

Miragliotta is one of the worst refs in MMA. That is something everybody has known for some years now. So it is not a surprise that he makes a stupid decision or a bad stopage.

Maybe I am wrong, but I think it was him who ref'd the Kimbo-James Thompson fight.

It depends on what was happening at the time. If the fighters were already separated/not currently engaged in grappling or striking, then a timeout would be appropriate.
