Brian Hemminger (MMAmania.com): Were you impressed with Carlos' warrior spirit during the fight? I think a lot of guys would be pretty discouraged getting taken down and controlled like that pretty much ad nauseum.

Mike Winkeljohn: Well you know what? I was definitely impressed with his warrior spirit but I look back at the fight and I know we were losing the fight because Georges was on top, but honestly, look at Georges' face after. Really, we probably did as much damage if not more from the bottom as Georges did from the top. He was on top controlling and imposing his will. He got the takedown points. In the stand-up, of course, we hurt him more. There's no doubt Carlos was a great warrior and he was in the game.

I'll tell you what. If we would have had a round or more of that, that would have taken its toll on Georges because we weren't going anywhere.

Brian Hemminger (MMAmania.com): Yeah, I noticed in the fifth round Carlos stuffed at least one takedown. It seemed the tide was starting to turn a little bit. So that was something you saw too?

Mike Winkeljohn: After the fourth round, I told him he had to knock him out, that he had to go out there and do it. He said, "Yes sir." I kind of had goose bumps because I really felt Carlos was gonna do what he nearly did do, that it was gonna work for us. After he got extension on that first single leg takedown attempt, I think it was the first one of the fifth round, I felt good, like "Here we go," but again, Georges is the best at what he does. That's why he's Georges St. Pierre.

I don't know as I'd go that far, but he did have offense off his back for sure.

Georges face always looks busted up. What really did it was the attempt to finish him by Condit after the head kick knock down. Was a great fight, I would like to see them fight again in the near future.

How someone's face looks is not a good enough indicator of who was winning the fight. Sonnen's face looked like a mess after the Marquardt and Silva fight, but he was dominating both fights (even if he lost one of them).

On the ground, GSP definitely landed more strikes and more significant strikes than Condit. On the feet alone, GSP definitely had most of the rounds; round 3 Carlos took it because of the knockdown and round 4 didn't have as much action on the feet.

Also, we have to remember that a lot of the swelling and damage happened right after the knockdown, where Condit landed some good shots.

He did something off his back but I wouldn't exaggerate like that. As far as the "tide starting to turn", no its called fatigue from taking condit down at will for 20 minutes already. Condit wasn't just mastering some "awesome" tdd at the end of the fight.

those elbows from the bottom cut GSP more then doing damage. That head kick, and GnP that came after did some serious damage though

Fighters like GSP, Diaz, Wandy, Hominick have an unfortunate situation. They cut and bruise quite easily, so after the fight, it looks like they took a lot more damage than they may have actually endured

Not taking anything away from Condit, he's a fucking warrior, but I think those same shots would have resulted in much less damage to say a guy like BJ

It goes beyond just bruising easily though. Can't write off having his whole sinus area cut open and the entire top half of his face bruised to just bruising easily. Those short punches from the bottom don't look like much, but they were definitely adding up.

It is a good indicator of who took more damage though. Even if you want to attribute it to having thinner skin, that's just a physical disadvantage like having a weak chin.

For example, I bet Silva's face felt a lot better the next day then Sonnen's did in the first fight. I bet GSP's face felt awful after that fight as well (Condit's probably did too, but not to the same extent.)

Winklejohn isn't arguing that Condit won the fight, he's just saying that he felt like Condit did just as much if not more damage. I'd agree with him. On points, GSP wins a blow out, no one is arguing with that.

Condit did do alot of damage of his back. The problem I have with Condit is that he is to content to stay on his back. Granted getting GSP off you is no easy task. The main reason I thought Condit would loose the fight to GSP was because of his takedown defense and he didnt dissapoint. I dont think Carlos could stop a takedown to save his life. He REALLY needs to work on the aspect of his game.

Coach would be in hot water if he came out bad mouthing GSP as he spends/has time at Jacksons gym. Funny though how they kept Condit away from GSP at the gym so some day this fight could happen, but Jones was with Rashad, and GSP around Diego
