| White: Silva and GSP aren’t going to give up their cash to form a fighter's union White: Silva and Georges St. Pierre aren’t going to give up their cash to form a fighter's union Quote:
According to Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) President Dana White, the chances of a union forming among his stable of fighters is highly unlikely. Simply put, he doesn't see his top earners such as welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre and middleweight champion Anderson Silva giving up some of their hard-earned dough in order to inflate the purses of the lower-tier fighters.
From his ESPN SportsNation Fan Chat: Quote: |
"I doubt it. The thing about fighting is, fighting is not a team sport, it's an individual sport. It's going to be tough to see a day with Silva or GSP is giving up big chunks of their money to guys who won't make two fights in the UFC. Different sports. But if it happens, it happens. I have to negotiate with somebody on the fight contracts."

Sounds like somebody is scared to me, but in fairness most businesses I've worked at are terrified of unions. I worked at a place that told us to come to management if anyone talked to us about forming a union, and I worked at a mega superstore (not to mention any names) that showed anti union propaganda film in orientation.

There's some truth in his statement. Many people want to believe hes anti union just to keep control of fighers and 'hold them down'. There are many instances of the UFC handing out extra checks just for a good fight, win money when a fighter didn't receive the W, & FOTN-SOTN-KOTN bonuses, all could be cut out within union negotiations. Then fighters would need a structured pay scale which would most likely bring the top fighters pay down. And tack on union fees to all the other costs of training.

The UFC is more like Hollywood. It's show business not a regular job. It's the the music industry, it's flaky, flashy, fun, and over before you can blink, espcially for those who lose 1 too many fights. For most fighters it will never be a solid career. A union would hurt the biggest asset to it's Brand, it's exclusivity. Most people would say the UFC only has the elite fighters, a union would threaten that image. Competition is the only thing that will make the UFC re-evaluate how they pay their bottom guys. And that's going to take a long time to develop. But I do believe it's starting to happen, as you have more networks looking for their own MMA brand to sell.
