Rampage had recent memorable fights with well known fighters. Might as well say Shogun and Wandy were relative unknowns too while you're at it.
Fact is, Rampage didn't have the same level of fan worship that he did in Japan (he never has here and has publicly bitched about that a lot) when he joined the UFC but he was absolutely a big name and easily marketable.
Anderson Silva hadn't fought in Pride for years, his last Pride fight was a loss, and unlike Rampage had fought multiple fights in orgs since that many American fans didn't watch. More so, he had never fought anything close to the star power that Rampage had at that point in his career.
So no, the two did not join the UFC in similar situations.
