As was noted earlier in this thread, BJ no longer has the skill advantage he used to, so he can no longer defeat the top guys at 170. They're bigger & have the technique to utilize that advantage.
I'd like to see Penn make one last run at lightweight. It was shocking to see how much larger Rory actually was. BJ can still compete with guys like Maynard, Guida, Pettis, Nate Diaz, & Cerrone. He may even be able to beat Bendo. At the very least he'd be a lot more competitive.

I don't even think BJ would be competitive at LW.
Lack luster conditioning, poor footwork, doesn't check leg kicks, doesn't protect his midsection.
Bendo would abuse him too.

Bendo would abuse him too. | This. I think he's done completely, LW or WW. He's a all time great, but his cardio is atrocious these days. His last two fights he gassed in the first round. I just don't see a run happening. Maybe a fun fight, but nothing serious.
An all time great for sure, but I think his time is done. Always up to the fighter though.

I would like to see him fight Maynard at 155. He's not too fast for BJ and they would have a war. Or if he wants to try and show that it was Nicks size that made him win he could go be a punching bag for Nate. I quite enjoy watching when the Diaz's can open up with their striking and talk some shit

Bendo would abuse him too. | The checking legkicks and protecting the mid-section comments are bogus. How many other guys at any weight class have taken Penn apart that badly? Rory is damn good. Not everyone has his striking & wrestling skills.
BJ has only shown poor conditioning at 170. At 155 he always seemed to have good cardio. Rory had a very long reach & size advantage, and (as mentioned above) he's just damn good. Top lightweights like Maynard, Cerrone, & Miller aren't putting together combos to the head & body like Rory, & none of them have his wrestling either. Maynard may be skilled but he's a lot smaller. No LW has ever been able to keep BJ down.
Pettis may have striking as good as Rory's but Guida proved his takedown defense left something to be desired.
Bendo's the only guy at 155 that poses similar problems for BJ as Rory, but he wouldn't have a massive reach or size advantage.

The only way BJ should keep fighting is at LW he's wasting his time and hurting his legacy at WW.

Also, Ive never had an issue with people showboating, so what Rory did didn't bug me at all. Was there anybody here that actually thought BJ or Diaz stood a chance against their challengers? The only fight that surprised me was Goose vs Shogun, because Goose let shogun get inside so easily on him, but the outcome was fully expected.

Time for BJ to retire. I think even at lightweight he is going to get beaten up. I've never been a fan, but even I don't want to see that. Like someone mentioned, the times have passed him by.
