Vinny Magalhaes: 'Style-wise, I'm a horrible fight' for Phil Davis

Vinny Magalhaes: 'Style-wise, I'm a horrible fight' for Phil Davis - MMAmania.com

When Forrest Griffin was struck down by the injury bug, it left Phil Davis without a dance partner at UFC 155, which is set to go down in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Dec. 29, 2012.

The light heavyweight scrap didn't exactly have title shot implications, seeing as how both men recently broke their skids and were looking to pick up back-to-back wins, so one would figure there wouldn't be much of an issue finding a replacement to take on "Mr. Wonderful" in "Sin City," right?

According to submission wizard Vinny Magalhaes, he was offered the bout against Davis, but felt three weeks just wasn't enough time to prepare for the bout, but did offer to take on the former NCAA Division 1 All-American wrestler in Feb. 2013.

At the suggestion of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) matchmaker, Joe Silva, Magalhaes started calling out Davis, but he has yet to respond to his challenge. According to the theories of the former M-1 205-pound champion, Davis only wants to fight him when he is out of shape and hasn't had time to prepare the right way with a full training camp.

Magalhaes also said his sources spoke to Silva, who informed him that Davis will be unable to make a February showdown because of prior "family plans," which didn't sit too well with the former The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) contestant.

His comments to Bloody Elbow:

Quote:

"Family plans? If it's something huge, I can understand, but if it's like a vacation or something, he should be like, 'I'm gonna have to do this later because I have a fight.' Then it would be a fair fight, because I would have a full training camp. I guarantee he'd take the fight for December, where he'd have the advantage. Now that I would have 8 - 10 weeks to train, he doesn't want to take the fight. He wants to fight me while I'm out of shape so he can have more chances to win. He knows if he gives me a full camp, it's not gonna be easy. Style-wise, I'm a horrible fight for him. That makes me real upset, and that's why I've been calling him out on Twitter."
Magalhaes recently made a successful return to the Octagon, defeating Igor Pokrajac rather effortlessly in the very first round via armbar at UFC 152 this past September.

I guess the author has never seen Pokrajac vs Magalhaes...since it ended in the 2nd round and not the 1st.

This is the fight I wanted to see as soon as I heard Forrest was injured. Vinny takes this and Phil knows it.

While Vinny may be better on the ground doesn't really mean he will be able to take Phil down... even if he does Davis has a pretty good ground game. If this fight happens I bet you it it doesn't go to the ground very often

I was really thinking more along the lines of Phil taking it to the ground or Vinny pulling guard. He's vicious off of his back. Even if it stays standing, I think Vinny could hold his own. His stand up has seriously improved since his first run in the UFC.

I think most guys with a decent grappling background or at least takedown defense will just take their chances standing with Vinny. Exact same thing that happens to Maia when he fights guys that don't want to go to the ground.

That's why I was thinking it be a closer fight though it'll be more of a matter of who has the better stand up and neither has really excelled there as of yet.

I think Phil could take this fight to the ground when he wanted, play defense, get back up, and rinse and repeat. He could win on take downs and octagon control. Throw in effective strikes and the take down and he would have Vinny in trouble. I would say UD to Mr. Wonderful, IMO.

And here lies the problem once again with everyone wanting to have a 3mo camp and drop 20lbs for each fight. Why is he so out of shape? Fighters (some) bitch a lot about money, hey train all year round and stay in shape like this is a real job that you go to work for and they cut you a check.

I don't blame Davis at all. He's been training for a fight and is about to finish his camp, why does he need to push things back for this Vinny guy.

This is why you'll see the Chris Leben's taken care of buy the UFC, both financially and with chances to prove themselves.

Agreed. Also vinny saying phil should cancel his plans because he has a fight? Ya.....no he doesnt....vinny wants him to but he doesn't....

Didnt Igor constantly initiate(sp?) the grappling when he fought Vinny? The guy has sub-par striking to be nice and Im sure Davis "could" stuff his TDs and beat him on the feet.

But if Davis decided to roll on the ground with him for 15 minutes then yeah, its a horrible matchup. But I think he'd be smarter then that.
