Junior dos Santos talks using ?wrong strategy? against Cain Velasquez, wants his rematch 'soon' - MMAmania.com

Cain Velasquez received his much-desired rematch against Junior dos Santos after one win, a first round annihilation of Antonio Silva at UFC 146 on Memorial Day Weekend, and made the most of it by dominating "Cigano" at UFC 155 this past weekend (Dec. 29, 2012) in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In what was a complete 180 of their initial encounter at UFC on FOX 1 back in 2011, the heavyweight tilt lasted longer than the 64 seconds it took Junior to snag the belt away from Velasquez. This time around, the Mexican-American beat the heavy-handed Dos Santos from pillar to post from the opening bell for five rounds, leaving his foe battered, bruised and beltless.

To the surprise of many, Cain even outclassed Junior on the feet, the man many consider to be the best striker in all of mixed martial arts (MMA).

So, what went wrong?

Junior tells SporTV it was the threat of Cain's outstanding wrestling skills that had him worried and forced him to use the "wrong strategy."

His words:

Indeed a determined Cain implemented his wrestling abilities to his advantage, taking Dos Santos down repeatedly after a few failed attempts early on. The threat of the takedown also allowed him to set up his strikes perfectly due to the fact that the Brazilian's hands were constantly down by his waist.

As far as a rematch, "Cigano" says he wants one sooner rather than later:

Despite "Cigano's" plea for an instant rematch, he will probably have to win at least one or two more fights convincingly before he gets another crack at Cain. Furthermore, Alistair Overeem is the current front-runner to get first shot at Velasquez, should he get past "Bigfoot" at UFC 156 on Feb. 2, 2013.

Nevertheless, a trilogy fight between Velasquez and Dos Santos is likely to happen down the road, much to the pleasure of fights fans around the globe.

Who would have thought that having a complete skillset would allow a fighter to impliment multiple gameplans and make it more difficult for his opponents to counter him? That Velasquez is a sneaky bugger. In fact when he's fighting a one trick pony like JDS it almost seems like it's cheating for him to use both wrestling and striking...

one trick pony, dude thats a little harsh but i see where youre coming from, junior talks about his jits and this was his chance to show it and he didnt capitalize on it, i noticed he grabbed the fence more than once, probably out of instinct. so if he finishes his next opponent i see no reason why he shouldnt get his rematch

I know, that JDS guy needs to learn some TDD, because stuffing 22 of 33 takedowns clearly shows that he only knows how to strike...

I did not even understood what his strategy was.
He never even tried any attack. From the very fist minute he was just worried about the takedowns but he did not attempted any attacks of his own.
Cain came out very agressive, but JDS knew that it would be like that. JDS in the pre fight interviews repeated tons of times that he knew that Cain would attack him and try to take him down immediately.
He knew that and it was exactly what happened.
From what we saw, it looked like his strategy was to just worry about the takedowns, and hope that in 25 minutes he lands a KO punch.
Well, Cain was beating his ass in the standup and the Cigano was so exhausted that he could not prevent any takedowns anymore.
Definitely it was a horrible strategy.

But I hope he learns from it and comes back stronger. He is very very skilled, but in my opinion he is kinda overconfident too, that probably does not help him that much.

Grabbing the fence prevented that figure from being even more askew.

TBH, I think they purposely train that fence grab maneuver at Team Blackhouse, lol

I was impressed momentarily by his TDD but I even said to my friends when we were watching that he better punish the failed attempts pretty soon. 35 seconds later he was on his ass taking a beating.

I'll admit calling him a one trick pony is harsh but realistically besides avoiding takedowns and having some sick punching ability JDS hasn't shown us anything. He's coasted on his natural talents for too long and he got crushed for it. Getting his black belt in BJJ doesn't mean anything if you don't use it, ask Jorge Gurgel.

Well to be fair he sets up strikes well and uses real strategy while boxing. He's not just going out there swinging wildly.
