White: UFC safer than the NFL

White: UFC safer than the NFL - Mixed Martial Arts News

Quote:

"Concussion is a huge dilemma right now for the NFL. Here's the difference between the UFC and the NFL as far as concussions are concerned.

First of all, if you get a concussion, if you get knocked out or you get hurt whatsoever in the UFC, three months suspension. You are on suspension for three months and you cannot come back until you are cleared by a doctor. You can't have any contact whatsoever. In the NFL, you're not going to lose Tom Brady for three months, man. You lose Tom Brady for three months and your whole season is wiped out.

So, the UFC, listen, we don't hide from it, it's a contact sport and that's what these guys do, (is) much safer. In the 20-year history of the UFC, it will be 20-years in November, there has never been a death or a serious injury. Never been a death or serious injury in 20 years because we go above and beyond when it comes to the safety of these guys.

When you know you have two healthy athletes getting ready to compete, they get the proper medical attention before and after, it's the safest sport in the world, fact."

Actually many people die every year playing golf due to lightning strikes, golf cart accidents, etc. I don't know exactly how many, but enough to make it one of the more deadly sports out there.

I'd like to know what he considers a "Serious Injury".
Big Nog getting his arm broken or the guy at the Fight For The Troops that snapped his leg in half might consider their injuries a little Serious.

Meh. I'd put more stock in this if the UFC was as old as the NFL, but I guess time will tell when more of the UFC roster retires and gets older (Parkinson's comes to mind).

Sounds like the safest sport in the world to me.

I guess Dana must be overlooking all the training injuries these guys are suffering lately cause to me they count as part of the sport.

It's very premature and short sighted to think these guys are not risking long term health injuries as well. Just because they are sitting out for a bit after being knocked out doesn't mean there won't be effects down the line. Look at Gary Goodridge who granted fought K1 as well he's certainly taking his share of hits/KOs in MMA i doubt he's gonna be arguing MMA is a safer sport.

It's all fine that Dana wants to make claims like this it's his job to make UFC look good be nice to see him back it up though on the safety end of things. MMA (not just the UFC) should be following the NHL program on concussions and be more proactive as well as be willing to enforce retirements.

I meant pro golf that has bad weather delays. Any sport that has 80+ year olds playing is probably going to have a high death rate.
