| Fighters are taxed 30 percent of purse when competing in Brazil
Fighters are taxed 30 percent of purse when competing in Brazil UFC Quick Quote: Fighters are taxed 30 percent of purse when competing in Brazil - MMAmania.com Quote:
According to UFC lightweight Gleison Tibau, UFC fighters are taxed 30 percent of their fight purse when competing in Brazil. The veteran 155-pound fighter has competed in the UFC 16 times over the course of his career and claims he declares his purses at the end of every year. But when he fought in Brazil for the first time under the UFC banner last October, Tibau says he was a victim of the "very heavy tax rate."
"Professionally, I liked to fight at UFC Brazil's, but financially, I found it absurd. Brazil charges many taxes of our purses, so I was unmotivated to fight in Brazil because of that. People pay taxes, I have no problem, but the money does not go to health, it does not produce benefit for the public. If it was a tax you paid, but you see the benefit, that's fine... The politics in Brazil is a very big robbery, that left me very sad. If I had fought in the United States, I always declare my purses at the end of the year. In Brazil, the check is already deducted, so is $50,000 that I no longer receive. It is a very heavy tax rate. I and other friends who fought in Brazil complained... We lose 30% of our purses."

Yet the UFC goes there quarterly and every Brazilian MMA fighter still begs for the chance to be on the card..

I really believe that people like Bill Murray or John Belushi are just as great and just as valid as Robert De Niro or Al Pacino. And I don't think you can say One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) is a better movie than Animal House (1978); they're different genres. I think they're both examples of great craftsmanship.

WHY would a fighter want to fight there then?
If the UFC isnt compenstaing this then I wouldnt fight somewheres where I automatically make 30% less when I can work anywheres else and make my full wage.

Death and taxes--this really isn't a surprise to me. Especially when you hear about how many UFC fighters are behind on their taxes, like Cowboy. And he's not the only one from what I've heard. Quote: |
Cerrone has bought boats, cars and accessories for his ranch with past bonus checks. But he said this one would go straight to the IRS because he “owes a little bit of money” on taxes.

This isn't that big of deal... government taxes in the united states are around 27%. I just got a bonus check and 27% was taken out.. and then if you live in a state that has state tax you still have to pay that as well which can be upwards of 6% all the way up to 11%.

Damn, I'd love to be paying as little as 30%. Still feel bad for fighters, I have no idea how work visas work but seems a bit of a shaft to them because without them Brazil wouldn't be making money off the event being held there alone.

HOSS-Bork, you should spend more time brushing up on your MMA history, and less time complementing guys on how young their penises taste.
