I'm just curious and want to hear some point counter point stuff | I like the flyweights, action packed, fast paced. I don't see anything to indicate we wouldn't get the same thing from 115 lbers.
Also, as somebody previously mentioned most of the fighters would come from Mexico/Central America and Asia. The little guys start doing MMA in those countries, it'll attract bigger guys to get into the sport. Thus deepening the talent pool around the world. Just a thought though. Quote:

I’ve been watching UFC since UFC 1. When the UFC implemented the Lightweight division, plenty of fans boo’ed during the bouts. There were complaints that the LW’s were too small and could not KO anyone. But, then things started to turn around, better LW fighters entered the division and it has become one of the more exciting divisions in the UFC.
I feel that the same will happen with the Flyweights and now the Strawweights. Dodson has already shown that there are smaller fighters out there with the power to KO, plus they are all athletically gifted freaks in terms of movement.
One other reason I support the UFC’s decision to introduce another weight class is another title to vie for. More belts mean more title defenses and those titles in the lighter weight classes seem to be contested on TV rather than PPV. To me, it’s just more exciting and dramatic when there’s a belt on the line. Even though the lighter weight classes will be kinda thin (no pun intended) at first, given time they will develop into the same UFC quality that the other weight classes provide.
Bring on the little warriors! | Agreed. Quote:

I don't get what the big deal is. There are some adult men who want to be a mixed martial artist and happen to hover in the 115 lb division. Why not give them an avenue? Are people going to be so butt-hurt watching this?
Plus boxing had weight classes below this for nearly a century.
Also, to let you know, amateur boxing in the olympics goes all the way down to 108 lbs.

| That actually makes sense if your thinking it could be a good way to spread into other markets. 115 is really big in Japan and other countries. I just have a hard enough time trying to hype up these fighters to common fans and hate to see things get more diluted. Maybe after we fill up the 125 roster or have it be 125-115 together like how heavyweight is 230 to 265.

Also, to let you know, amateur boxing in the olympics goes all the way down to 108 lbs. | For me it's just the lack of depth at the lower weight classes of really talented or at least viable guys that deserve to be on main cards. The 125lb division is very thin as is and it would make alot more sense stacking it up with better fighters first. I don't see it as much different when sports leagues start selling off more franchises and end up diluting the talent pool you end up seeing less skill and talent and still pay the same or more for it.
I think the difference between the smaller in MMA as opposed to boxing is the actual grappling aspect of things. It looks odd watching to guys that small grappling to me anyways.
I'm not saying there shouldn't be avenues for guys in that weight class to fight I just don't think the UFC is the place for it. Still really think Zuffa should be looking at running a developmental promotion where they can properly develop a woman's division, weight classes that don't have depth and guys that can't hang in the ufc.

These are legitimate concerns.
The concern that watching small men fight each other makes one feel icky inside is not. Those are personal preferences. These are also adult men who should be given equal opportunities to pursue what they are passionate about. How is this discrimination any different from not wanting women fight? or black people being allowed to play baseball in the late 40's? Are there safety concerns with strawweights fighting? No. Have these weight classes fought in boxing, wrestling and grappling competitions. Yes. Have they been recognized at the olympic level. Yes. So, it's time for some people to grow the fuck up!

I have no interest in watching skeletons brawl. I don't want to see another Corey Hill. |
