Lyoto Machida ponders move to middleweight division - MMA Fighting

"Yeah, if I have a chance, I'd like to fight at 185 pounds," Machida said. "Maybe I can fight in both classes, you know? Everybody saw when I drank water before [stepping on] the scale last time. I showed everyone I can, that I can drop down."

Of course, there's a big obstacle awaiting Machida if he was to drop to middleweight: One of his best friends in the business is his Black House campmate, champion Anderson Silva.

"The champion is my friend," Machida said. "He's Anderson Silva. He will continue his career here. He's number one pound-for-pound in the world."

But that doesn't mean Machida can't take fights at 185 pounds for the sake of taking interesting fights. When asked if there was anyone he'd like to fight at middleweight, Machida demurred.

"UFC can choose [an opponent] for me," Machida said. "Anderson has his deal and I have my deal."

In the meantime, Machida still is very much in the mix at light heavyweight. While Machida and Dan Henderson are generally regarded as the top two contenders for Jon Jones' title, there has been no promise of a title shot for the winer. Machida, who was previously promised a title shot after defeating Ryan Bader on Aug. 4, then turned down an offer to fight Jones on three weeks' notice in September, isn't letting title talk get in the way of Saturday's fight.

"I think who wins, me or Dan henderson, deserves the title shot," Machida said. "But, anything can happen inside the UFC. I don't think about that, I'm just focusing on my fight right now."

i hope to see him make the move down. he gave jones a challenge, but i don't see him getting the title. he can easily make the weight cut, and he's quite a few years younger than anderson with no real signs of wear and tear on his body due to his fighting strategy.

Can't wait for this fight. Obviously I am pulling for Dan, but I really like both guys. They both have great fights in whatever weight class they choose. I would love to see Vitor vs Machida at 185 or Chael vs Machida at either weight.

Machida was finished quicker than any of BonesJones opponents during his short time as champion.

IF anyone gave Jones a challenge it was Vitor and that armbar attempt in the first round...and thats a BIG IF...

I don't like Machida, but he can have some interesting fights at 185 after Hendo blasts his face off.

Before that magical armbar attempt by Vitor there was only once where we got 2 see JBJ tested really and that was the 1st round with Lyoto I'd bet that Lyoto hit JBJ more in that 1st round than anyone has in a full 3 or 5?

I think he'd be pretty sucessful if he could make the cut. Hes got the striking edge over alot of striking based MWs, and his TDD is top notch.

Fights with Vitor/Franklin/Bisping/Lombard all have technical battle or crazy fireworks written on them.

im not going to take the time to look, but im sure he has been hit more than 8 times in his other fights.

EDIT; I got a little curious so i went and looked and right off the bat i found that Rashad hit Jones 10-30 for significant strikes and 11-31 overall for round 1. So does that mean Rashad humanized Jones as well Repenter?? He had a better striking % in that round - more significant strikes and more total strikes than Machida had in round 1 of his fight with Jones.
