Muay Thai and BJJ
but out of those two I'd say your friend should do Kickboxing, and you should do Sambo. It's more important to enjoy the MA you take up and have no reservations than to do it with a friend - you will make new friends there anyway.
git.

Check out the schools in your area. mine has standup (kung fu san soo) with lots of knees and elbows on mon, wed, then BJJ on tue, thur. Open mat on friday and sat. get the best of both worlds.

If you are going to do standup, look for a Muay Thai school (or the closest possible). I agree with Hypergit, do what you want. Check out the local schools and just find the one that suits you best.

Do what you want for sure. Are you a fighter or just someone who wants to learn. I train Gracie JJ and kick boxing/ Muy Thai. I love it I have gave myself 3 years for my first fight for money. I have done a lot of fighting on the street( ask Pride Fan or Nole) . That will make all the difference if you want to be good.

It goes without saying that fighting experience is invaluble but I have found it is better and of course safer to get that experience in a controled and educational environment, like school. JKJK keep it in the dojo.

| grapple
Depending on your age, I always recommend getting involved in a grappling. Prefferably wrestling. If you can get involved with someone very skilled it immediately increases both your endurance, and all around strength. Also great wrestlers are aggressive. From there combining it with some sort of striking and subbmission is teriffic. I went from being a nationally ranked wrestler, to Judo, to Aikido and basically combined them all. To me learning to grapple first was the way to go because i flet so comfortable with it that it was then easy for me to strike from any position, and work submissions in. The Judo Dojo I attended taught a lot of strikes as well, hence the striking. I took a bit of karate but I didn't feel it helped me as much as i hoped.
